Determining The Efficacy Of A Light Bulb

Improved Essays
3.2 Performance The first thing to consider when talking about a light bulb’s performance is the brightness. The brightness of a light bulb is measure in lumens (lm). It measures how much light the bulb outputs so the more lumens, the brighter the light. The power consumption is also important to know how many lumens a bulb produces per watt. The ratio of total output lumens per total watts used to power a light bulb is called luminous efficacy.
Figure 2 shows a table comparing the luminous efficacy of each type of light bulb.

Another thing that must be taken in account regarding the performance of light bulbs is their light spans. A CFL bulb lasts about ten times longer than an incandescent bulb. They have an average lifespan of approximately

This in turn affects the operational cost of LED bulbs. The price in the market for an LED bulb is $8. The price is more expensive compared to CFL bulbs. However, this expense is recovered in a long run since LED bulbs consume less energy than CFL bulbs. Only one LED bulb is needed for 25,000 hours of use. The total cost of electricity for the same amount of hours and same rate is $30. In the end, the total operation cost of a 10 watt LED bulb ends up being $38. When comparing the two operational costs, there is a difference of $10 between both options, leaving LED bulbs as a cheaper …show more content…
The fact that they last for more time means that they do not have to be replaced often. Therefore, the impact of manufacturing, packaging, and shipping is reduced. Additionally, they consume less energy, making them a more efficient option. However, according to Seong-Rin Lim , a Korean environmental engineer, in his article “Potential Environmental Impacts from the Metals in Incandescent, Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL), and Light-Emitting Diode (LED) Bulbs,” LED and CFL bulbs contribute to the resource depletion of copper due to its high content. Many metals are used for the making of LED bulbs. Ling also mentions that “considerable resource depletion impacts will occur due to the insufficient availability of silver, gold, antimony, and copper resources” (1044). Gold and silver are used to make the LED chip. Aluminum is used for the heat sink as mention previously. A benefit that LEDs have is that they do not contain any mercury which makes them a more environmental friendly option. LED bulbs can also be recycled due to the amount of metals and plastic they

Assume the bulbs are on four hours per day for 365 days. You will need to determine the kilowatt hours (kWh) used. First, multiply the wattage of the bulbs by the number of light bulbs to determine the total watts used in one hour. Then multiply the result by time in hours to obtain the watt hours. Next, divide the result by 1000 to obtain kilowatt hours.…

Dead Again uses different lighting techniques to create dramatic contrast and a sense of mood in each scene. This is highlighted through the film noir scenes when dramatic high contrast was achieved by using two extremes of lighting, a lack of light and a heavy amount of light. This was especially shown in the opening interrogation scene. During the scene the light in the room was the only light source present and everything else was in complete darkness. In the scene the contrast was so strong that in order to be visible the actor playing Roman Strauss had to lean forward into the light source.…

LED lights use roughly 75% less energy compared to the standard lightbulb. Because LED lights conserve a substantial amount of energy, they last for a long time. On average, LED lights last over 30,000 hours (U.S Department of Energy). Due to the extensive amount of life LED lights have and the low maintenence, the school’s energy expenses will reduce considerably. In turn, the amount of money saved by using LED lights can be used towards bettering the education for the…

For general, soft coral reefs up to twenty-four inches deep you can achieve good results with 150-watt bulbs, although the result would be much better with a 250-watt bulb. But for more demanding species, start with 250-watt bulbs, especially if the depth of the tank is greater than twenty-four inches (Hayes 23). It is important to remember light reduces in proportion to the square distance from the source, Greater depth is the more light you will need (Hayes 8), therefore it is essential to use a minimum of four bulbs on tanks up to fifteen inches, and larger…

its color led to the formulation of this experiment. The experiment utilizes chloroplasts of spinach leaves to test the different color lights’ effects on photosynthesis. Green light is said to be the least effective at driving photosynthesis on the electromagnetic spectrum due to being mostly reflected and transmitted instead of being absorbed. Conversely, red light and white light is more effective at driving photosynthesis (Reece, 2011). Thus, a hypothesis was created stating that the rate of photosynthesis will be greater with a red light bulb compared to a green or white fluorescent light bulb.…
