Theme: Young people facing a challenge

Intro:

In life, everybody faces challenges. I have chosen to explore the connections family and friends support, and Determination. The texts/films I have chosen are; Michael Hill (Silver Linings), Craig McKibbin (Silver Linings), Soul Surfer (Sean McNamara) and Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Matthew Vaughn).

Text 1:

The challenge for Michael Hill in Silver Linings was that his house had burnt down with everything he owned in it. He had hit rock bottom, but still he pushed himself way out of his comfort zone and went out on a limb.

His family helped him out financially and supported his every decision, no matter how wildly insane they might have sounded. Like, for example, when he was unsure

If a challenge is thrown my way, I tend to stay back and survey it for a bit, unless the reward is right in front of my nose. If I think I can do it ill go for it, but if I think I’ll fail I tend not to try. This is important because if you don’t give everything ago you might miss a great opportunity to do something you might end up loving.

Movie 3:

Bethany Hamilton from the movie Soul Surfer was out surfing with her mates one day and was attacked by a shark and had her left arm bitten off. She was in hospital for a while but as soon as she was let out, she wanted to go surfing. She faced her challenge head-on and kept doing what she loved, despite her being now physically handicapped.

This happens when Bethany goes to the nationals for surfing and her family are all divided as to whether she should go or not. I think she firmly sets her goal when her dad finally agrees and says, “OK, but it won’t be easy.” Bethany replies with, “I don’t need easy. I just need possible.” This is really powerful as it shows that with all she’s been through, she’s still determined enough to have the mindset that just because it won’t be easy doesn’t mean she can’t do it, if it’s possible then she can do

They then proceeded to launch a missile at every single one of them and destroy them. The only Kingsman agents left were him and a “behind the scenes” man called Merlin. They were each other’s only support left, and they were determined to find out who had done this to them.

When they finally find out who did it, they uncover a much deeper operation is going on. The drugs the cartel is distributing are laced with a virus that make the users skin turn an inky blue, then uncontrollable jerking, paralysis and eventually death. It’s up to Kingsman and their newfound partners at an American organization called Statesman to find the cure and bring down the operation. In one of the fight scenes in a bar, is where the movies most iconic quote is uttered by Harry, Eggsy’s former mentor. “Manners Maketh Man.” This essentially means that you cannot be a real man until you manage to use your manners, even with your worst enemies. Eggsy is determined though because throughout the fight he’s apologizing and making smart comments, much to the enjoyment of his

Failure has always been a huge aspect in my life recurring in everything I indulge myself in; whether it be academically, athletically, or even Boy Scouts. I tend to have a knack for challenging myself till I am unable to complete the task given to me, whilst this could be good in some ways it also puts me in some not favorable situations. More recently I had the thought of completing a bike race , after receiving medical attention for a concussion and a broken collarbone. This was not necessarily the smartest decision on my part, especially since the race was longer than I have ever raced before and also a three day event.…

Today’s youth are much the target of discussion when it comes to their plans for the future. Unfortunately, they are at the center of much of the conversation regarding standards of education, HIV and AIDS, mass incarceration of young people, and violence in America’s big cities. Most of these issues are focused on, structured around, and disproportionately impact young African-American youth. Many of these youth are already involved in some type of illegal activity and view this activity as a viable way to insure that they have a sizeable income. For this reason, many African-American youth are no longer convinced that college is a valuable choice for their future.…

When I was fourteen, a neatly demarcated threshold between childhood and adulthood manifested before me, identifying itself as “Coming of Age.” And to be fully honest, I wasn’t thrilled about it. To my limited knowledge, Coming of Age was just a program at my church where each week we would talk at length about, well… something. After that process had repeated itself enough, I would have to make a personal speech about the somethings I had learned. All that time for a vaguely defined speaking commitment hardly seemed worth the trouble.…

Young people have continually been a huge subject in our society. People often define youth as just a period between childhood and adult age, but youth is not simply that. There can be a variety of different ways in which we can identify youth and its true meaning in relation to different aspects and influences in our surroundings. Youth can be argued as a social construct rather than a universal concept because everyone has different experiences in their lives and not everyone experiences youth. It is important to understand every aspect that contributes to what youth is, because there is so much more to youth than a group of people or an age.…

There are also harmful impacts from TV news. One of these harmful impacts is the differences in how specific sexes and races are portrayed in news about adolescents. One study found that males were largely overrepresented in news stories, being three times more likely to be featured than females. This overrepresentation is also found in crime related news stories, where 80% of TV crime stories about teens involved males. Crime is the focus among all races of teens, but African Americans and Hispanics tend to fare worse than white students.…
