Adolescent Suicide Problem

The practice problem that is of interest to me would be adolescent suicide. This is of interest to me because I plan to work in a school setting someday and I need to be prepared for a situation like suicide. It is also a problem because it has such high rates of death among the youth. This problem can be specific to one client, a family and/or to a school district. However, I would want to address this problem through the use of family. Some important findings towards adolescent suicide from the article by Beck-Little, R., & Catton, G., includes the thought that100 out of 200 efforts of suicide in youth and adolescents are effective. M., Castellanos, D., & Pettit, J. W., says that some studies have found that students who demonstrated having anxiety were more likely to have suicidal ideations. It also said for those who are working with students to be aware of the relationship between anxiety and suicide. Another article I found in regard to suicide is by Renaud, J., Berlim, M. T., Mcgirr, A., Tousignant, M., & Turecki, G. In this article it stated that depressive disorders, substance/alcohol abuse disorder, and disruptive disorders are risk factors associated with teen suicide. It also mentioned that hanging is the most common method of suicide. Kara’s feelings and emotions are connected to her actions. Therefore some goals for Kara would include, first talking about her suicidal thoughts. When we are talking we need to see if she has a plan or theory how to go about with the suicide. We also need to learn how to ignore the bullies or how to make new friends. Another goal is to build up communication skills to better communication with her family about school. Social support theory will help with all of these goals. They all seem to connect together as well with this theory. I believe with the social support theory Kara will be able to connect with her family about what is happening at school. This theory would also help with her anxiety and pressure to do well in school. Having a good relationship with her family will help everyone know what others in the family are going though. After those hopeless thoughts and feelings are gone soon her suicidal thoughts will disappear too. If Kara’s family is there for her, she will feel like she has friends again, she will be able to talk to them about the bullies at school. She will be able to express herself and have someone to listen to her. Once these goals are taken care of, I believe her suicidal thoughts will be
