There are many issues involving our probation and parole systems in the United States. Probation and parole are both contemplated community corrections that include supervision in the community. There are many problems with overcrowding in prisons due to long term sentencings. Due to the overcrowding in prisons they have no choice but to release them early from their sentencing and that is unfair to the other offenders considering it is unfair to the offenders that committed a lesser crime and has to serve their full sentence. Probation is a sentence where a convict is being released from incarceration but they are still under the courts supervision. Both community corrections are developed as methods to diminish the brutality of punishment that the offenders can face. They help the offenders in undermining the severe consequences they would have to face while they are in prison. Probation and parole gives them a chance to go back to their community to prove their behavior and to reduce their sentencing if they are well behaved and have not violated the terms and conditions. Both probation and parole involve supervision of the convicted criminals. Parole is arranged by a parole board and probation is well-arranged by a judge. Rhay, Jerry Mempa was convicted of “joy riding” in a vehicle that he has stolen, he was then sentenced to a two-year probation term in Washington State. During that same year while he was still on probation Mempa was involved in a burglary. The county prosecutor moved to have his probation revoked. During the probation revocation hearing about his involvement in the burglary Mempa was not presented by counsel, he was not asked if he wanted counsel either and he was not given any chance to make any statements on his own behalf. Mempa’s probation was revoked and was sentenced to a 10-year term in the Washington State Penitentiary.
