Abortion is a highly controversial topic of debate; this debate evokes strong emotions on both sides. Abortion is a pretty cut and dry topic; you are either Pro-Life or Pro-Choice. Pro-life advocates are people who believe abortion is ethically and morally wrong, and that it is the government’s job to protect all people including the lives of unborn children. Pro-choice supporters say that it is not the government’s responsibility to protect the unborn children, and women should have the right to determine whether or not they continue with their pregnancies; by choosing to have an abortion. Women’s rights concerning abortion were brought to the forefront during the court case of Roe vs. Wade in 1973. This court case gave women the right to …show more content…
If the country were to take away this right, many people say that they would be violating many women’s rights and would cross civil rights lines as well. Pro-Life Supporters say that: if a fetus is not able to survive outside of the mother’s womb, then it should not be considered its own human being. Almost all abortions take place during this time, when the fetus is not viable. Viability is when a fetus can survive if they were delivered at that time, usually around the 23rd or 24th week of pregnancy. Many Pro-Choice supporters see that fetus life before viability is nothing more than “potential life,” not as a real life; therefore, it should not be considered murder when the fetus cannot survive alone. (Lowen, par. 10) Another key point to legally provide abortion is that people will find a way to terminate their pregnancies no matter what. If abortion is not available, women will most likely turn too much more dangerous actions of illegally aborting their pregnancies. Abortion performed in a medical clinic is very safe and has a 0.5% risk of complications. (Lowen, par. 9) It also does not affect to woman’s future ability to conceive or hold a pregnancy. Making abortion illegal, not giving women the choice, will lead to many dangerous instances of woman having illegal and potentially very dangerous ways of abortion.
