Discrimination, Prejudice, and Stereotyping
Discrimination and prejudice are a very prevalent issue in America. There are many different forms of discrimnation such as racism, sexism, heightism, ageism, and so forth. These ways of thinking are very destructive and should be eradicated. These issues are especially prevelant in the area where I live, which is South Carolina. With the shooting in Charleston, where a white man shot several Black church members, the Rebel flag was finally pulled down from the State building. Racism and prejudice are so prevalent in this area that it took the killing of innocent church going people to bring down a flag. I am half Asian and half white. I 've actually been discriminated against by my own races. White people have discriminated against me the most. And I 've had to get in many fights growing up. I started realizing I was different in elementary school, when I heard a white kid making fun of the way Asians speak. I was very strong as a kid and would usually enjoy fighting with people who tried to single me out. I 've even had my own friends make little smart remarks about me and my race. Later on in life I realized I didn 't need to associate with these people whatsoever. So I quit associating with them. Years later those same people would look me up on social media sites, like Facebook, requesting to be my "friend". I usually accepted their friendship and looked past their ignorance. But I never forgot about the times they poked and jeered at my race. Whites arent the only ones though. Asian people also singled me out, knowing that I 'm not completely Asian. Even some of my own family members have made comments about me being mixed. I tried to make friends with certain Asians in school and also tried to learn the language. When I tried to speak to them they just laughed at me
