There will always be a family day scheduled, where they bond and enjoy each other’s company after a long, busy week. That can be a possible reason why Filipinos grew up having high regard for the old. The elders act as guides and advisers to the succeeding generation since they are perceived as wise and experienced. Filipinos know too well that it is better to do what the old folks want, be it ridiculous or not; since it is considered rude when one doesn’t obey or listen to they have to say. This statement is what everyone would always hear from their parents:
“Hindi naman masamang makinig sa sinasabi ng matatanda para makasigurado lang, wala namang mawawala kung susunod.” Superstitions are one of the few things old folks advise to their families, friends, and even strangers; of course, people have to listen and keep those “instructions” in mind for the elderly are constantly pestering people with little reminders. Everything has a scientific basis now; back then when the sun disappears from the sky, people starts praying or sacrificing things for the fear that they have infuriated the “sun god”, but then science explained that it was just an eclipse, a natural phenomenon, and doesn’t cause any disaster or calamities. Rational thinking and scientific education has led to the abolition of most superstitions. However, some beliefs are very enigmatic and have their own allure even if they are disproved, they are still practiced. Nonetheless, superstitions are part of the Filipino culture that cannot be removed even after more than 300 years of Spanish colonization and other foreign

Our world is one where science and logic are dominant, but remnants of superstitions can be seen even in the modern age. Why is it that so many cultures across the world have negative superstitions relating to cats? An entry in the London Journal theorizes the rationale behind the negative stereotype; cats “bring to a certain extent the habits of a wild beast into the domestic circle” (G. Vickers 28). While this makes perfect sense, it’s still unclear as how cats went from being a divine symbol in Ancient Egypt, to an omen of misfortune. One reason for this drastic change was due to the cultural differences between the Egyptians and their Roman conquistadors; the Romans considered the Egyptian’s to be pagans and destroyed many temples and religious…

Although most people do not believe in superstition, they follow people’s daily lives—some are common, such as knocking on wood, while others are more elaborate, such as rituals during football games. Nowadays, forgetting to perform a superstitious ritual will not end in terror, but in the past people thought terrible luck would befall them for forgetting. Superstition thrives in poor, rural areas because the people living there look for luck to improve their circumstances. Ireland, who has not always had a strong economy, has a rich history of superstition although the traditions are not widely practiced anymore. In her short story “Night of the Quicken Trees”, Claire Keegan mixes superstition and reality in a modern Ireland, and the main character Margaret Flusk engages in several rituals to avoid bad luck.…

Being a part of the younger generation one must embrace our elders and show them the respect they deserve and welcome them as a part of society. We may be young, but our families are aging, and one day we will be put in a position of ageism.…

According to “7 Cultures That Celebrate Aging And Respect Their Elders,” in China, “Chinese families traditionally view filial piety and respect for one’s elders as the highest virtue, deriving from Confucian tradition.” Furthermore, this shows how the people in China habitually show high civility for seniors in the community. By saying that they traditionally care for their community elders, they are saying that it is customary to respect one’s elders. Typically, in China, children care for their parents and other elderly people. To care for your elders is a great sign of rectitude and morality.…
