Being born in Europe and moving to the United States has influence both positively and negatively. The biggest negative is hating reading and writing in English and also the English language as a whole. Technology also, school is becoming more and more digital and technology is becoming more advanced but at the same time the quality of education is decreasing rapidly. But there are positives that outweigh the negatives, such as receiving a high work ethic.
I was born in Hamburg, Germany and lived there for about three years, but I grew up in Hartford/Wethersfield. I lived in Hartford for a couple years and my parents decided to move to Wethersfield because we were in an unsafe environment. My family was dirt poor when we first came to the United States, because we came here with nothing and had to

I’ve always had problems with my writing, since I had no one in my household to assess my writing. I became really frustrated, because I would have to stay after school multiple times a week while I was in elementary school. I almost had to stay back multiple years in elementary school because my writing was atrocious. Personally I hate reading in English because I can’t picture what I read in my head which makes it very difficult to understand what the true meaning of a story is. I love to read and write in Croatian but I don’t do it too often because there is no point to. Even though I like in the United States of America, I hate the language! It’s so complicated sometimes, because there are silent letters and things aren’t spelled how they are heard unlike Croatian, where everything is spelled, like how it sounds. Throughout all my years in school, English class has was always my worst subject, especially senior year of high school because that’s where I had to write the most essays, including my college essay, which really put a lot of pressure on

I actually very much so enjoyed writing throughout elementary school because I was able to write stories. This style of writing was enjoyable to me because it allowed me to let my creativity soar, and not only did it help my grammar, it also helped my penmanship. This style was also way more exciting than filling out worksheets or practicing spelling words out on a white board. But, in fourth grade, half of our english class was spent learning grammar. I constantly struggled in that class and never could seem to grasp the concepts.…

The barrier language that I have between Hmong and English is what makes my writing difficult to understand from the start of the school year, not only that, but also just me trying to throughly write an explanation of what I have thought of in mind. Sometimes it doesn’t come out on the paper as I have, have in my thoughts. Which in return create flaws in my level one, two, or three writing paper that affect my writing skills. The flaws that I have slightly improve on my writing: create a clear and stronger thesis statement, subject- verb agreement, and transitioning. Constructing a firm claim and allowing the reader to be able to identify which position I’ve take through my writing by creating a rough draft of what I am going to say in…

What comes to mind when you hear the word “Immigrant”? Do you think of people who are living in the shadows? English purists study and theorize how English would sound without any foreign influence. English was and is a Germanic based language, but has over its lifetime bred with non-Germanic languages to create Modern English. “Pure” English is what English would sound like without the foreign influence, which includes any non-Germanic tongue, and purists pursue this for a variety of reasons. Regardless of why purists study “pure” English, the influence and change of English is best studied by looking into its changes over time and identifying which languages influenced it most. A major change in the English language was the influence made on Middle English following the year 1066, the year of the Norman Conquest of England.…

On June 14, 1984, at the age of twelve, I moved to the United States of America in the hope and dream of becoming an American citizen in the “land of opportunity.” The transition from the Jamaican culture to the American culture was difficult to get accustomed to. I was taught to read, write and speak the Standard American English which is basically a foreign tongue to the Jamaican people causing much pain and anguish. There was a point where I wanted to give up on reading and writing altogether. Through schooling, I attained the literacy skills that have helped me in my childhood involvements, professional studies and gain a useful understanding of the Standard American English language.…

Writing has always been a struggle for me for as long as I can remember. I find it difficult to put my thoughts on a paper, especially if I have to do it in another language. Some people think that as long as they can speak a language or communicate with other people, it is enough. However, these people are totally wrong. People do not only need to speak a language fluently, but they also have to be able to write it.…
