Origin/History of the Problem and Current Policy Context:
Many researchers have labeled the situation of extreme poverty in direct relation to India’s long-standing caste system. The caste system is most commonly defined as a social structure in which classes are determined by heredity. The caste system has been arguably been around since the 11th century and also seen as constructed or supported by the British in order to assist in colonization. In the caste system, individuals in the lower levels, such as the Dalit, were almost always given demeaning job for often little to no pay. Since the caste system was determined by heredity, those born to parents in a lower caste were forced to be in the same cast. Inter-marriage of castes was not allowed which provided no escape of this cruel system for future generations. In this structure, most of the population fell in the lower levels forcing many into poverty for the many decades to come. Dalit’s constitute the majority of the poor and unemployed. The caste system is widespread in rural areas, much like the Madhya Pradesh
