I Carry Your Heart With Me By Ede Cummings Analysis

Edward Estlin Cummings, better known as E.E. Cummings, is one of the most popular American poets of all time. He successfully experimented with many different types of writing styles and distinguished himself by his unique word play and experiments with syntax, punctuation and dialect. While critical opinion differs on his overall achievement, the originality of his style is not in doubt” (Alprandini, 1). He found such success with his work that it continues to be reprinted in every major anthology of American poetry. The lack of uppercase letters in situations where they were supposed to be, is a signature of his. Cummings was known as a modernist, and modernists believed in taking away what was unnecessary in a poem in order to show off the intended form and purpose of the poem. Along with this grammatical difference, Cummings misuse of punctuation was interesting as well. He used the punctuation in his poem to emphasize ideas. In the title of the poem, there are no punctuation marks which suggest a close, intimate feeling similar to the feeling you have with a loved one. Cummings is trying to impress to the reader the idea of physically wanting to be close to a loved one.
Throughout the analysis of the poem, the themes became apparent. The obvious theme of love was major, along with language and communication and awe and amazement. The theme of love is focused on the unity of love and how the speaker and lover are connected by it. Cummings is playing with language and communication by the unique choice of wording, parentheses, and the execution of language and linguistics.
