Part TWO: Part TWO:
1. Reflecting on Constructing the Fraction Materials
a. I constructed my materials by hand with a pencil, ruler, and scissors. After I constructed my materials I used a laminator to laminate them so that they would retain their shape.
b. To make my fraction strips, first I folded a piece of construction paper hot dog style into fourths. I then cut out the four sections along the folded lines. I then took one of the sections and measured how long the paper was (hot dog style, the long way). The piece of paper was 12 inches long. For the fraction 1/12 I divided the 12 inches by 12 which gave me 1 inch. Using a ruler, I then proceeded to mark every 1 inch until I reached 12 on my paper with a pencil. I cut the paper with

Allowing students to use pictures, models, manipulations, and/or fraction strips allows them to take the numbers off the page and allow them to represent the numbers in the problem. In other words, manipulates allow students to create their own models for abstract mathematical problems. When I used the fraction strips to solve the problems in question 3 it allowed me to visually see the problem and solve it. Polly stated, “we decided to stop and provide a model and an example of a division story problem. Providing a real-life context using division and acting out the story engaged students and gave them an example that they could refer to as they started to write their own problem” (Learning to Share Equally, 561-2). Creating a visual for students to think back on helps them picture out the problem.
b. Manipulates are also a way to engage students which draws their attention and may increase their enjoyment of mathematics. In the article, Making 10 My Way, students use unifix cubes to solve problems. Bofferding stated, “the lesson materials afforded different strategies and access to students, and the level of student engagement in the exploration excited the teachers” (Making 10 My Way, 168). The teachers were able to notice that their students were engaged when using the materials and this excited

It represents how many people will need to come to break even. When 241 people show up, the budget will break even. Gradually, as 241 breaks even, $2410 will be our current revenue. The reason that it is 241 people and not 240 is because if you had 240 people show up, the revenue would be 2400, the cost is $2007.19 and you can’t go below budget. As time progresses, our current flow of revenue will make a significant increase.…

My experience to English 1101 was totally different from my high school English class, but it was also a good learning experience. Making the transition from high school was a lot different because of the fact that college you only have the class for a semester and in high school you have the same teacher all year. I learned a few things last year in English 1101 that I didn't know. I learned how to do a film analysis on the movie The Village and how the colors from the movie had a meaning behind them. We also learned from the movie how the position of the camera means something.…

I work in a school district and I believe that a school is the heart of the community. It is where we meet our neighbors, where our children make friends and families gather for school activities. It is about people. When you have a neighborhood that is struggling, you will also find the school is struggling. As I watched the video Building Expectations, Portrait of Lincoln High School there was definitely signs that this community was careworn.…

Appropriately specific brief summary of MCK Test results. It was during week three that I completed the Mathematical Content Knowledge (MCK) test for the purposes of determining my level of understanding relating to certain mathematical concepts, such as multiplication, division, addition, and place value (Curtin, 2014). Before starting, I felt overly confident in my ability to successfully answer all the questions within the quiz, however, it was not until I skimmed through the questions that I began to think otherwise. The beliefs in myself concerning mathematics is one of duality: I know that I am more than capable of solving complex questions, yet I am also conscious of my lacking motivation behind the subject itself which stems from…

Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 1010 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. When I first started this course, I was scared and didn’t really know what to expect. I branched out to different styles and types of essays as well as incorporating outside sources into my work. When I received my first essay back with the feedback and the grade, I realized that I was not a really good writer.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

When it comes to Composition 1, I learned a lot. In the beginning I wanted to learn how to become a better and creative writer. I also wanted to learn how to come up with topics and write about them easier. One last very important thing that I wanted to learn was how to prepare myself for college next year. After finishing Composition 1, I can say that I did accomplish all of those goals.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

    Understanding Fractions

Fractions Understanding a half When students begin learning about fractions, it is imperative that the educator starts by assessing the students understanding of what a half is. Based on the Australian Curriculum this often takes place in the Year One descriptor (ACMNA016), where it identifies that students are able to half an item and identify how it is an equal portion. Developing a understanding into how to halve an object so both parts are equal, play a vital role in understanding how fraction work, this is based on a half being the largest fraction before making a whole. A child can demonstrate a understanding by folding a piece of paper over onto itself to make half, but then also go on to describe that they are equal as they are equal…
