The definition of physical inactivity according to Lee et al., (2012) is described as “an activity level insufficient to meet current recommendations” (p. 221). The recommended amount of exercise for an adult is 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week (President’s Counsel, n.d.). “Less than 5% of adults participate in 30 minutes of physical activity (PA) each day; only one in three adults receive the recommended amount of physical activity each week” (President’s Counsel, n.d., para. 1). According to the Presidents Counsel and the other studies used to write this review, regular PA could produce long-term health benefits. Some benefits are the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as coronary heart disease (CHD), some types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes. In 1990, the physical activity guidelines were established. These recommendations were set to promote health and to help prevent NCDs. Evidenced supports the amount of 150 minutes, a week of moderate PA as a strong factor in promoting health and disease prevention. The evidence also shows that physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for mortality (Barreto, 2015). Even with the recommendation for lowering one’s risk of health issues and results from literature, physical inactivity is still a public health problem. The recommended amount of 150 minutes each week may not be feasible for some population. This article reports facts that PA promotes health even with less than the recommended amount. Barreto 2015, goes on to say brisk walking is associated with a reduced mortality risk with a minimum of 1-74 minutes a week. Exercise is exercise, and getting even a few minutes each day has proven benefits to better health
