Hospital Pharmacist
Hospital pharmacists work in either National Health Service(NHS) or private hospitals. (Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, 2011) They are the vital part of healthcare team and work together with physicians and nurses to offer the best treatment for patients. Like what community pharmacists do, they also offer help and advice to their patients on their medicines. (Fitzgerald, Warwickshire and College, 2010)
Unlike community pharmacists, it is crucial for hospital pharmacists to undertake medication reconciliation immediately on any admission of patients into hospital. (Dunkley, 2011) Besides, they also take part in ward rounds with other healthcare practitioners, advising and providing evidences to them for which the dosage and pharmaceutical formulation of medications is appropriate for each patient. This also means that they accept prescriptions by military doctors only. As a military pharmacist, it is important to fill the prescription as soon as possible as well as ensuring the prescriptions are correctly filled. Like community pharmacists, they also provide advice to their patients upon requested. On the other hand, there are some differences between military pharmacy and retail pharmacy. For example, brand name medications are not accessible in military pharmacy because only generic names are listed. The major component in patient care is counseling service. As pharmacist is the bridge between physicians and patients, counseling service become increasingly important in the pharmacy profession as the volume of prescription need to be filled increased significantly nowadays. Unlike pharmacists, doctors are too busy to have counseling with their patient. Not to say that pharmacists are very free as sometimes they will be extremely busy, but they sure can spend some time with their patient to have counseling one on one. In addition, pharmacists undergo training in pharmacology which enables pharmacist to provide more information in details. (Will, 2010) There are more new services provided in pharmacy also help in maintaining the healthy life of the public like smoking cessation program and pregnancy testing. A successful example is cardiovascular disease risk can be reduced by having blood pressure test and cholesterol test regularly. Most of the pharmacy nowadays is providing this service long time ago and it is convenient for people who live far away from hospital and reduces their waiting time in
