“Forty-one years after his American husband first sought legal status for him, Australian immigrant Anthony Sullivan has finally gotten a green card — but that wasn’t the real victory in his long struggle, he says” (Ring). This couple has been fighting for a “legal” marriage for many of years due to Anthony not receiving a green card. Anthony and Richard were one of the first legally same sex marriages. They have gone through many of appeals, court battles, and denials. They went through all of those because the U.S. government would not recognize their marriages. It got to the point where Anthony had the choice to voluntarily leave the U.S. or that he would end up getting deported. They followed what they were told and left, but they were not done yet. They both came back to the U.S. through Tijuana, Mexico. This couple wanted to get their story out so they had a documentary made about them called Limited Partnership. After going though all of this they want to leave a message for everyone, “Just by standing firm and articulating the integrity of what we were doing.” And even before the apology letter and the green card, they achieved their true goal, he says: “The goal was to stay together” (Paul). They made it clear many of times that they were doing this for their love for each other. They have been going through fighting for their marriage for over 40
