Descriptive Essay: Penn Place In The Heart Of New York

Superior Essays
I live in the heart of Manhattan. I live one block away from Penn station, in between 34th and 35th street on 8th avenue. I live at the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel. I am in a very populated area of New York City. It is not populated with lots of residence but with commuters and tourists. The building that I live at is the only place on my block that you can reside. You can tell that my street is very touristy and very convenient for commuters. The buildings that are on my streets are all food stores. On my block we have a pizza shop, a diner, McDonalds and a Starbucks. On the corner of the block is both a CVS and a Duane Reade. By living right at Penn Station our block is a very busy place at rush hours during the week. So in-between …show more content…
The next block over is Macys and from the New Yorker hotel it is only a five minute walk to time square. Madison Square garden is also above Penn Station. The New Yorker is the closest hotel to Madison Square Garden. Due to the vast number of tourist attractions near the block that I live on, the block is always busy and crowded. Madison Square Garden is home to many different concerts, sports games, and even different shows. The most recent big event that took place at Madison Square Garden lead to an increase to hotel residence over the week. The Westminster Dog Show took place and many of the Dogs and there handlers stayed at the hotel since it was a two minute walk to Madison Square Garden. The events at Madison Square garden have led to many famous people living at the hotel and have brought many guest to the hotel as well. Most people that travel on the block are people who are just passing by. The shops that are on the street are a strong indicator of that. All of the food places are quick in and out restaurants. The only place where you can sit down and eat is the dinner, but that still feels very rushed and is not a place where you want to stay long. There isn’t any place that people like to hang out on my block, it

Taking the time to value New York, will allow people either living or visiting to acknowledge the place they are in. New York is a highlight for many people all over the world. It includes people who are searching for adventure, work, or for a new beginning in their life. In the essay, “Here Is New York”, by E.B. White, there are several assimilations about noticing how different some New Yorkers are. White states that although New York has so much to offer, people do not always use every opportunity they get, “The New York of the man or woman who was born here, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and turbulence as natural and inevitable.”…

But can the effects of gentrification be good in a community like Pilsen. As I drove east down Cermak, into Pilsen, the neighborhood I once called home. The only thing recognizable was the businesses that managed to stay opened after the changes. The family owned restaurants and stores have turned into cafes and art galleries. The walls that were once covered in murals are…

I live in an area that is a cross between the ghetto and suburbia. In my neighborhood, I can literally see the difference a block makes. The race division, the housing projects that grace Beach Channel drive, the much more elaborate homes a block away in Shore Front Parkway, and the rich versus the poor. We often perceive the rich as well refined, privileged with better education and somehow well mannered.…

Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Ten years ago summers for the children of Bushwick promised many things. Some things nostalgic; Puerto Rican Day parades, celebrations of American and Dominican Independence days, cookouts on the sidewalk, people watching on the once-deteriorating stoops, hip hop pulsing through passing car’s speakers, cherry-flavored piraguas, bathing in the refreshing cold water spewing from open fire hydrants. Some things, such as rampant gang violence and the sounds of police helicopters circling the neighborhood, are not as favorably remembered. However negative the image of the barrio may be, the Latino community undoubtedly carved their culture deep into these spaces. The sense of neighborhood that the predominantly Latino population created is in the…

When walking around the city of Philadelphia, the majority of advertisements focus around one word: Phillyosophy. A popular way of describing the comprehensive personality of Philly residents, Phillyosophy is often interpreted by locals as the unique attitude Philadelphians have due to the city’s defining characteristics like it’s rich history, welcoming cultural perspective, and passion for sports. Growing up in the shadow of this city, I’ve developed my own Phillyosophy over the years. Since Philly could possibly be considered one of the “most American” cities in our country due to its infamous role in American history, I equate my Phillyosophy to what makes me American, although it doesn’t prove a holistic representation of “Americanness” altogether.…
