Reflection On Social Work Values

Improved Essays
While these experiences were difficult to face, they were the first steps toward forming deep value for loving and caring for people, especially marginalized groups. While at a young age my values were primarily products of my cultural background, my spiritual journey began to have the most impact on my values as I matured. I grew up in a practicing Christian family, but I did not begin to act upon my faith until I was a freshman in high school. In the final months of my freshman year, I lost all of my friends and fell into a state of depression and anxiety for the next five months. It was during those months that I became aware of my desperate need for God and really began to pursue a relationship with him. After I emerged from my time …show more content…
I value service, not only because care about people and believe that it is a good thing to do, but because I believe that it is an essential part of knowing God; Matthew 25:31-40 is a passage that most clearly depicts this belief. In the passage, Jesus is judging the people of the earth to determine who was truly his follower. The people were simply divided up by those who helped the hungry, the thirsty, the strangers, the naked, the sick, or the imprisoned and those who did not. Those who did help were his followers because and those who did nothing were not. At the end of the passage Jesus states that the reason that those who helped others were his followers is because caring for those who were in need was equivalent to caring for him (Biblegateway, c1995). I take this passage to heart, and for that reason I value my service to others and strive to serve to the best of my ability. My belief in this passage also support the value of social justice because it stresses the importance of reaching out to groups who are commonly marginalized. Rather than ignoring the groups, Jesus demands that his followers step into the lives of these people

It is more blessed to give than receive” and Luke 6:38, “...For the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” We as mankind are selfish creatures, and that is not how God created us in the beginning to be, sin caused us to become selfish. God created us to love one another and to carry each other's burdens ergo we must serve each other and our God. Plantinga puts it this way: “According to God’s intelligence, the way to thrive is to help others to thrive; the way to flourish is to cause others to flourish; the way to fulfill yourself is to spend yourself” (pg. 22). Look at a husband and wife relationship… when one is serving the other (without the expectation of a counteraction), does that relationship not flourish?…

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

I tend to think of this point as the most important point. Standing and serving those in need doesn't have to just be the poor, it could be a friend who was being bullied, or someone who simply needed help with homework. As Catholics, we stand by people who need assistance rather than running away and ignoring them. This summer, I worked at the Center for Food Action, which is a food bank in north Jersey. Helping out and delivering the canned good and donations to the needy was such an amazing experience.…

These responsibilities include being respect, cultural sensitivity, competence, professional, flexible, and trustworthy just to name a few. Now, rating myself a seven seems realistic. In the field of social work, we are faced with ethical dilemmas, more often than not. These dilemmas can come from conflicts with certain social work ethics and standards such as the right to self-determination, dual relationships, or confidentiality. A social worker can even face an ethical dilemma from a conflict of morals and values that they may have with their client. I will be examining an ethical dilemma that intersects both morals and values and confidentiality. Let’s say for example a social worker has an 18 year old client who is pregnant, still living with their parents and seeking an abortion.…

The example of Saint Francis helps me better understand service and stewardship values in various ways. I believe that Saint Francis has humble and candid beginnings as he was a normal person and enjoyed being with friends and having fun. Francis had various turning points in his life that made him realize what truly matters to him. Therefore, Francis displayed service by not caring about any judgment or qualms against the lepers and just accepting them as God would for who they are. Francis also helped me better understand stewardship because he never asked for anything and gave everything he had to others.…
