I value service, not only because care about people and believe that it is a good thing to do, but because I believe that it is an essential part of knowing God; Matthew 25:31-40 is a passage that most clearly depicts this belief. In the passage, Jesus is judging the people of the earth to determine who was truly his follower. The people were simply divided up by those who helped the hungry, the thirsty, the strangers, the naked, the sick, or the imprisoned and those who did not. Those who did help were his followers because and those who did nothing were not. At the end of the passage Jesus states that the reason that those who helped others were his followers is because caring for those who were in need was equivalent to caring for him (Biblegateway, c1995). I take this passage to heart, and for that reason I value my service to others and strive to serve to the best of my ability. My belief in this passage also support the value of social justice because it stresses the importance of reaching out to groups who are commonly marginalized. Rather than ignoring the groups, Jesus demands that his followers step into the lives of these people
