Personal Success in College “Success consists of going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.” (‘Winston Churchill Quotes at BrainyQuote.Com’) In college some may experience the failure of a test which can lead to less enthusiasm and make it difficult to find their own personal success. Finding success depends on person to person. For some, success may be getting an A on a quiz or maybe passing the term with a 4.0 GPA. At the national level, 46% of current community college students will not graduate from any institution within 6 years and another 20% will still be enrolled without yet having earned a degree, if current trends persist (The College Board, 2012). Stress reduction methods include but are not limited to visualization of goals, taking frequent breaks, and having a proper support system. According to Skip Downing, in her book On Course: Strategies for creating success in college and in life, “…stress is any interference that disturbs a person’s mental or physical well-being.” Stress can bring one’s motivation to a crawling halt. Using a visualization of one’s goal will keep stress to a low, while it assists in looking at the overall picture instead of the stress of writing a paper. Visualization includes relaxing and picturing a complete objective. For some, visualizing themselves in a cap and gown climbing on to the stage to receive their degree is a great way to visualize. A proper support system may be a close group of friends, or family, who will be there when things seem stressful. They are a great tool of motivation, to encourage him or her when life seems hard, or maybe during a time where one has failed a test. They will push him or her to keep going even when it may seem hard. Their outside motivation will push one to reduce the stress caused by an incident and to assist one in pushing toward one’s ultimate goal.
The last step to becoming successful in college is to have personal awareness or understanding. Finding one’s personal awareness may include finding one’s learning style or finding a growth mindset. A growth mindset is where one may understand their mistakes and grow from it. Unlike a fixed mindset, where everything is black and white, a growth mindset allows one to move past any complication and to alter plans to fit proper
