My Grandpa, Gary Hardin My grandpa, Gary Hardin, is one of the military veterans in my life who I am close to and likes to tell stories of the past. He was drafted for the army young and missed the birth of his first child. The hardest thing about being in the military, according to him, was being away from his family. My grandfather is still a big family man with a loving heart. He was born on January 28th, 1950 in Greenville, SC. Born to Ethel Jane Wilson and Jack Warren Hardin, he was their third child. He has 3 other siblings, 2 older brothers and a younger sister whom he still meet up with today. His childhood was mainly spent in mill villages but that wasn 't uncommon for the time. "Everybody was raised in mill villages,” according to him.

That was rough on him as a high school student. He completed high school but unfortunately one year later he was drafted into the Army. He received his draft notice in the mail on February 14th, 1970 and he proposed to my grandma on the same day. He used two giant candy hearts to propose with instead of a traditional ring. They had only been dating for a month, but they 're still married 45 years later! They were married April 25th at a small wedding, and in the words of my grandmother, "He hasn 't run me off yet!" Gary completed his basic and advanced training at the age of 20 in Fort Jackson, SC. He left for Korea in August of the same year, and was away for 13 months. He was stationed in Wijambu, Korea and worked in the 43rd Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, also known as MASH. After being there for only 3 months, he was made chief clerk so he was in charge of the orderly room and the post theatre
