Personal Essays: The Purpose Of A Personal Essay

Improved Essays
Pointless. Spend hour upon hour thinking about deep and meaningful metaphors to impress your teacher for what purpose? Occupy your days contemplating the most spectacular and breath-taking experience you can think of, but why? The purpose of a personal essay in my opinion should not be concerning who has had the most traumatic life experience but about who can ultimately give the reader a true look inside them. This unfortunately I simply cannot do. Personal essays have always been a chore and a tedious task to me. Not to mention the small success rates. It is difficult enough to think of a fascinating topic, but then they expect you to write about your feelings and discuss them? It cannot just be me who dreads the moment we need to hand in the little monster we call the …show more content…
This includes me. I am physically incapable of thinking about expressive ways to convey how I feel. My past two personal essays have consisted of phrases like “I felt betrayed and unloved” and even “I was so upset.” This is about as varied as my images and language choices seem to get, much to my teachers disapproval. Not to mention my horrendous word choice such as ‘bad’ and ‘good’ in multiple previous essays. So anyone can plainly see the pain I endure whilst writing deeply emotional imagery in an attempt (which usually fails) to impress. At least I’ll never have the problem of my imagination running away from me. Past attempts, you may have gathered, therefore were not very successful at all. I battled with every aspect of my last essay, from the threatening introduction to the horrendous encounter with the conclusion, not to mention the fight with the body of the essay. These traumatic past experiences are what encouraged me to write this ‘inspirational’ essay today. I’ll even admit it is much easier to write about my dislike of writing a personal essay than to write a genuine

Studies, led by James W. Pennebaker, show that experiential emotional writing enhance one’s physical and mental health improvement. It is believed that changes in basic conceptual and linguistic process during writing give better physical health, subjective well-being, and selected adaptive behaviors when people are confronting deeply personal issues (Pennebaker, 1997). Participants of this research are from many groups of people, different ages and occupations. They disclose their personal dark past, and a large number of them are deeply upset by the incidents, but this writing assignment was valuable and meaningful in their lives.…

My English professor made me write a minimum of five pages for an essay and I never wrote over three pages since high school. This course was a challenge for me, but it also taught me the value to writing. The more papers I wrote in college made my views change on writing. Writing became a secondary voice for me, it wasn’t difficult for me to write about what I knew or either what was near and dear to my heart. Although I respect writing, it is still something that I still struggle with till this day.…

In high-school, one is told what to write about and have to follow a certain type of rubric. When a teacher will usually assign an essay that will be about 2-3 pages long, with an introduction, body, and conclusion. In college, students are supposed to write in a different manner. It is often said that teenagers begin discovering themselves in high school, but I did the opposite- I lost myself. The source of my pleasure and delight shifted from books to parties, writing to boys, and video-games to my social life. Something within me desperately craved to be normal- to no longer be the girl that gets harassed and ostracized for being an “appalling nerd” and because of this, vital aspects of my personality began to change and I morphed into an entirely different person. Through this journey, I learned that my self-hate was a catalyst for self-love and appreciation. Having always been considered an unusual girl in the eyes of my peers, I'd never been truly comfortable in my skin.…

Going back over my fifth grade notebooks has not once failed to make me laugh and cringe at my boy troubles and lists of cute boys in my class. I love words. I love reading them, writing them and interpreting them. Through all phases of life, I had a usual nature to try and write my feelings down and call it art, even if it were scribbles on a Post-It note. Same goes for the song stanzas I wrote in seventh grade that were really loosely based on a Taylor Swift song and are still relatable today.…

My grandfather was born in Gilroy, California, in 1939. At the age of eight, my grandfather moved to a ranch near the outskirts of Gilroy, where he lived in a one room shack with his mother, brother, and step-father. For seven years, my grandfather lived in that poor shack, where he had to cover the holes in the walls with newspaper or cardboard just to keep warm during the cold winters. Years later, my grandfather decided to make something out of his life, and enrolled at San Jose City college in 1972, and graduated in 1975 with an Associate degree. While enrolled in San Jose City college, my grandfather was offered an internship to work for the Santa Clara county in the investigation program unit.…
