Personal Effectiveness is the capacity to transfer ideas and information clearly in order to create a positive and energetic impact. It helps in gaining a clearer understanding of self-awareness which also helps in forming relationships with others and reduce personal stress. This topic is studied under the branch of ‘Positive Psychology’. Personal Effectiveness is often viewed from the angle of business management and the pioneers in this field are Dale Carnegie, Deepak Chopra, Stephen Covey, and Wayne Dyer, who have also penned down several books on different aspects of success as well as spirituality. This factor greatly influences the personal effectiveness of an individual, because the more we learn, the more ‘effective’ we become because ‘effectiveness’ is nothing but being more productive and doing things competently in a timely manner. Time management is another feature that plays a very vital role in increasing the personal effectiveness of an individual because effectiveness is all about being well organized, while learning to juggle a lot of responsibilities at the same time, and still finding time for rest, sleep, relaxation, and personal relationships. In 1970, John Grinder and Richard Bendler developed the concept of Neuro-linguistic programming wherein any obstacle or barrier to learning is removed by the method of organizing and giving a structure to what we experience in terms of what we see, hear and feel. This increases the self-efficacy of an individual which directly contributes towards the personal effectiveness of an individual. According to Albert Bandura, ‘self-efficacy relates to beliefs in ones capabilities to mobilize the motivation, cognitive resources and courses of action needed to meet given situational demands’. Creativity is the quality or potential to do something that is ‘out of the box’ or in other words ‘different’. Often in corporate settings, these two qualities are highly looked out for in the employees. These help in increasing the efficiency of the employees at their work place. Moving on to the next characteristic, which is, Communication skills. These are a set of skills that are utilized to communicate effectively. In most cases, effective communicators make good leaders. The last three aspects are Assertiveness, Negotiation skills, Self-Awareness of body language and gestures. Assertiveness refers to being ‘confident’ and ‘sure’ about things, without being overconfident or aggressive about it. It is very important for all individuals to develop the quality of assertiveness. Negotiation skills are another group of skills which are deemed to be important especially in the corporate settings, it is seen as a crucial skill in the form of a business tactic. Last but not the least, Self Awareness is an umbrella term which comprises all the essential characteristics under it. In order to gain ‘personal effectiveness’, it is of utmost significance that a person is aware of himself first. Our own strengths, weaknesses and attributes are important for us to know without which, we will not know in which area we need to improve.
