As an aspiring clinical health psychologist, I realize increasingly the value of self-analysis. Conducting periodic self-assessment is a healthy activity as I evaluate my current state and where I want to be. Clinical health psychologists expend emotional and physical energy as they help others. Sometimes the daily strain of the job and stress that accompany the job can exhaust the clinical health psychologist both mentally and physically. Professionals cannot provide for clients if their own needs are not being met. The other four children are either in college or living on his or her own, but they still need Mom and Dad from time to time.
Recently, I have experienced stress because of illnesses to my friends or their spouses. In the last six months, my good friend died of cancer within a six-month diagnosis; another good friend’s husband is meeting with a surgeon as I write this because he has prostate cancer; a co-worker’s husband who is 30 has just been diagnosed with cancer, and a small child in our church has been diagnosed with cancer. As I address these stressors, sometimes I feel like I am in a firing line waiting for the bullet to hit while at the same time I have to be a supportive person for my friends and their spouses.
I cope with stress by eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of sleep, and exercising regularly. I run half-marathons, so there are many training days where I run from 45 minutes up to a couple of hours. During this time I think to help pass the time. I process issues with my clients and myself and brainstorm as I run. I usually feel debriefed after I run and am able to let go of things that have been bothering me. Additionally, I share and talk with my husband. We have a very connected relationship and just verbalizing things helps me analyze and resolve issues. To help with my task-oriented characteristic, I plan my week and incorporate fun activities, mindless activities, and times just “to be.” If I do not plan ahead, I will
