Along with Facebook, Twitter is an extremely popular social media website, and ranks second in popularity among users. Founded in 2006, Twitter is a fast-paced mini blog where posts are limited to 140 characters. With more than 320 million active monthly users, the health care industry has embraced Twitter(5). Twitter provides instant updates on current events as they happen. A recent study(5) examined posts made by orthodontic patients on Twitter in order to assess perceptions of orthodontic treatment, specifically motivational factors, expectations, and experience. Twitter was ranked fifth best choice, although now, it would most likely be ranked higher as the number of Twitter users has skyrocketed since publication of his article. The positive feature of Twitter is that it provides a quick, succinct way to text message everyone at once. To maintain credibility, it is important to keep tweets up to date, as to not lose followers on the site.
In fourth place was YouTube. While there is plenty of space to upload videos, the abundance of space is also a deficit, as the site is stuffed with a plethora of videos, making specific ones potentially hard to find. Interesting and educational videos can be provided through this website. In order to realize a higher likelihood of seekers finding a practitioner’s website, it is essential to create key words that will lead the seeker to the desired place.
3rd place was awarded to blog creation. If used consistently and frequently, it is a great way to provide detailed explanations of practice philosophies, approaches, frequently-asked questions, etc. But, once again, it must be kept current. Additionally, in order to do the blog justice, it does require dedication and a lot of time. But, if done well, an excellent blog could make a practitioner stand out among the crowd, and appear as more of an expert in the
