Should PEDs be permitted Rhetorical Analysis
Rhetoric is one of the most powerful things in the human language. It can be used in all different ways to sway the reader’s opinion one way or another. In the case of whether Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) should be used or not two authors: with opposing, stances use their rhetoric to sway the reader the way they intend. On one hand, an author arguing for PEDs uses logos while the other arguing against PEDs relies on a fairly heavy concentration of pathos. Although both authors are arguing the same issue they choose certain rhetorical devices to prove why their point is correct. He also stated “I had to prove them right and then to prove myself right” (Pappa & Kennedy, 2012). They have done this by pushing themselves to their limits each day to be the greatest of all time. Then came performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), the killer of sports. Cheating has grown to be the biggest problem resulting from PED use. Mary Shelley believes that PED’s become monstrous once mankind's misuses them; however, has mankind misused them at all? Many people believe that PED’s have no affect on the sport they play. Steroids, for example, are a PED that increases muscle development, but what if the sport has nothing to do with strength. In “Performance-Enhancing Drugs Should Be Legalized”, Stephen Wang agrees with this motion when he states that, “In sports such as baseball that require skills other than just endurance . . .…

Jose Canseco, a Major League Baseball (MLB) player who admitted to the use of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), once said, “I don 't recommend steroids for everyone, but for certain individuals, I truly believe, because I 've experimented with it for so many years, that it can make an average athlete a super athlete. It can make a super athlete incredible. Just legendary” (Bodley). PEDs promote muscle growth without the fatigue that comes with normal muscle building activities, allowing athletes to work longer, harder, and recover quicker. This is what draws many players in the MLB to performance enhancing drugs, the fact that they allow players to quickly become physical specimens beyond the capacity a normal person could ever achieve.…

From an athlete 's perspective they may see performance- enhancing drugs as just another boost to help them stay on top and nothing is wrong with a little “boost” but because of the lack of information provided to the athletes they are misinformed about what drugs they are taking or the technology of the performance-enhancing drugs such as injury prevention that can occur (Verducci). Finding such information such as performance-enhancing drugs could prevent an athlete from injuries is an even more reason for performance-enhancing drugs to be reviewed before banning them. Injury prevention could change the lives of many athletes, saving them from a lifetime of pain and misery because of a major injury an athlete was not able to fully recover…

Most people caught using PEDs are using completely legal ones. Most likely athletes will use HCG or others that are legal in the US(Katz,2008). J Savulescu, B Foddy, and M Clayton, all professors in the field of sports medicine, argue in their article “Why we should allow performance enhancing drugs in sport” that the use of performance enhancing drugs is becoming more effective despite the health risks present in these drugs, stating “… despite the health risks, and despite the regulating bodies attempts to eliminate drugs from sport, the use of illegal substances is widely known to be rife” (Savulescu et al. 3). Scholarly professors and sports fan alike tend to be biased when the phrase “performance enhancing drugs” is thrown around and fail to fully analyze the issue. The truth of the matter is that the use of such drugs will harm the athlete, but with certain restrictions these drugs can be safe. Setting limitations to athletes and having medical supervision over these drugs can provide benefits to the sport and end the ongoing issue of the legalization of performance enhancers. Rather than testing for drugs, medical professionals and sports analyst should look more into the issue of health and fitness, putting the strength of individuals to the test, as this is what sports portray.…
