Glory Movie Analysis

Robert Baden Powell once said, “The uniform makes for brotherhood, since when universally adopted it covers up all differences of class and country.” This quotation means that the uniform the men wear for battle symbolizes union and brotherhood no matter what race and culture, during war all men are equal. This quotation relates to the movie “Glory” because it shows how the American Civil War created a union between two different races. In the movie “Glory” many African American soldiers didn 't have decent shoes when they enrolled in the war giving them a disadvantage then the white soldiers. If the 54th regiment was composed of white soldiers, then the department would have given shoes, but since the volunteers were made up of African Americans the department pretended not to have shoes as a mockery and joke due to discrimination. Another discriminate fact was that African Americans weren 't paid the same as white soldiers, they received only $10 dollars and white soldiers received $13 dollars. When General Robert Gould Shaw informed his soldiers that they are not receiving the same salary as the white soldiers the character Trip played by Denzel Washington was outraged. He states, “ not going to take no slave wage.” Meaning he will not accept the salary given to him until he receives an equal pay like the white soldiers. He tore the paycheck up, and the other soldiers began to do the same. After noticing the chaos the General decided that if his men would not accept the salary giving by the department then he didn 't accept his as well. This is the point of the movie where the men gained the respect the General deserved, and got equal pay for
