Nursing should focus on patient and family centered care, with nurses being the patient advocate for the care the patient receives. Patient and family centered care implies family participation. This type of care involves patients and their families in their health care treatments and decisions. I believe that it is important to incorporate this kind of care at Orange Regional Medical Center (ORMC) because it can ensure that we are meeting the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs through their hospitalization.

Relieving patient fear and anxiety can be a challenge when the nurse has less time to spend with the patient because of increased patient load. This does not allow the nurse to develop trust with the patient and family and discuss details about the patient and their treatment.
There are ways to improve this type of care, but it will take dedication and a hospital wide effort. Implementing mandatory training by professionals on how to give patient centered care should be incorporated into yearly competencies. Secondly, dealing with high patient to nurse ratios need to be examined so the nurse can spend more time with the patient and family. Achieving a first good impression will help the patient and family have a positive outlook on the patients care.
Also, having a patient or family advisor for the facility and family can help with care that is given to the patient run more smoothly, and questions answered, with the whole family present. This has been shown to cut down on the time the patient spends in the hospital. This also has been shown to increase patient satisfaction surveys because the whole family is involved, not just the patient. Having multidisciplinary meetings with the patient and family can help expedite care in a timely manner also.

To fully implement patient and family care would help to get the word out to the public what the hospital has to offer and have positive reviews for the hospital. This in turn could bring in
