Kids all over the world are being asked: “Do you have ADHD?”, if they cannot stay on task while doing class work or project. The answer is usually followed by question what does it mean. National Institute of Mental Health(NIMN) gives a definition :”Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders... difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity).” It is one of the most common disorders that can affect human life throughout childhood into later adulthood. There are more then sixteen different medications to treat ADHD; the most common are Mehylin, Concerta, that contains methylphenidate, also Adderall that contains extroamphetamine and amphetamine . All of the names sound complicated and confusing but the functions are pretty simple. They all are stimulants, they send a stimuli to the brain system. That stimulus goes into the brain and changes chemistry that allows human to concentrate and overcome the hyperactivity. Ritalin, another drug that contains methylphenidate, is used to treat not only ADHD but also ADD (attention deficit disorder) and narcolepsy (sleeping disorder) . These drugs really do change people 's lives. According to NAMI (National Allience on Mental Illness) Ritalin has the affect on brain chemistry right away, which means kids and adults can live a normal social life everyday of their life . There is a big variety of drugs out there that contains somewhat similar ingredients to Ritalin. Some of them are Methylin and Metadate CD and different variations of Ritalin (Ritalin SR, Ritalin LA). The difference between all of this medication is that they come in different forms like tablets or capsules and the price. Because so many people have the disorder a lot of them can not afford very expansive drugs like Methylin which costs around 475$, but there is an alternative treatment like Ritalin which price varies from 99-175$ which is more affordable for low income families . No matter how expensive this drugs are most of the parents would do their best to help their kids.
