Analysis Of Parable Of The Sower

The Key to Survival In the novel, Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler, the powerful perk of being educated is constantly demonstrated as the story progresses. Not only does it allow you to know what to do, eat, build, drink, and collect, but it also allows one who has general knowledge to be protected as a valuable asset for those who are curious and need educated guidance. Butler makes this very evident in the case of Keith. Due to his knowledge of reading and writing, he is let alone at first by the gangs. Later he is fully accepted into one on the condition that he helps the gang members learn to read and write. Also, Lauren is described earlier in the book, as reading every possibly useful book that she can get her hands on. She does …show more content…
As I woke up, I felt a warm, humid breeze trying to smother my face. At first I thought it was just a little air ventilating through my room but then I remembered that it was winter back home and the air was almost always cold. Upon, realizing this, I opened my eyes cautiously and looked around. I was covered by lush soft golden grass, feeling too comfortable I rolled onto my back and stretched. Yawning, I slowly got and looked around. I was frozen in my tracks, for endless miles all I could see around myself was mellow hills with trees every now and then. I muttered out grunt thinking about how the hell I could have gotten here and where was I anyways? After a few minutes of pure confusion, I started to walk slowly towards the top of the closest hill; my rubber soled converse squeaking as they rubbed against the soft dried grass. When I got to the top, I scanned the horizon trying to conclude where I …show more content…
The instant I saw the endless rolling little hills, the tree top like trees and the distant giraffes, I knew where I was; Africa. Sitting back down trying to think what I should do, my asthma started to kick up. Frantically I tousled every single pocket on myself only to find that they were all empty. Remembering my doctor’s advice about this kind of scenario, I started to try to relax. Looking at my empty sweaty hands and focusing. My breathing started to get a little lighter. I started to think about what I should do but I couldn’t come up with anything. Remembering how I never paid attention in school or to my dad I started to cry, what was I doing here and most importantly how could I possibly get back home from such an uninhabited place like this. After an hour of feeling sorry for myself I heard a low but steady thumping. Starting to feel it in the ground I turned around and saw a herd of maybe fifty elephants, both big and small, stampeding towards me. I started to run as fast as I could towards the clump of trees and bushes to my right. My heart was beating loud enough to hear it when I got there, sweat dripping from my brow I turned around and watched the group

When there are so many different breeds of intellectuals in society, how and who decides who are the more meaningful or effective if they are not evaluated in different settings? Having a college degree or having great grades throughout the years in school is not necessarily a reflection of one person’s intelligence. In “Hidden Intelligence”, Gerald Graff argues for the merging of the “street smarts” students adequately into the classroom curriculum, stating that student’s interests are identified as anti-intellectual, and that the educational system ignores the potential that might emerge from their areas of interest. Graff also calls into question the legitimacy of the educational system that favors more notable literary books or subjects…

In Parable of the Sower Octavia E. Butler develops Lauren as a protagonist who, as she grows, is a character with conflicting emotion. I believe this is done because Lauren is a teenager and so are a majority of the readers and as you develop you start to form your own beliefs on certain subjects. I can relate with Laurens religious dilemma, because I am currently questioning “what if” and it always buts me in a scary, uncomfortable position of which side I should take. As I think more and more about it i begin to be hesitant because if there is a higher entity than what will happen is I stop being faith to this higher entity. Lauren questioned God and compared him to greek god, I also began to do so because my Catholic God was developed later…

In the essay “Hidden Intellectualism,” Gerald Graff states “schools and colleges might be at fault for missing the opportunity to tap into such street smarts and channel them into good academic work” (264). Schools these days tends to focus more on “Book smarts” than “Street smarts” because they feel these individuals will succeed scholastically and will most likely receive a higher education in their future. As Graff says that sometimes society associates the educated life just to the bookish knowledge that they consider to be the most important text to be learned. But the person who is enough intelligent to turn any subject into an interesting topic to be listened to is a “Street smart”.…

When you are book smart you are subject to just the book knowledge. Being street smart however, what is learned can be applied in real life. Book smart creates the groundwork to becoming successful, but the way success is developed depends on street smarts. In his essay “Hidden Intellectualism,” Gerald Graff describes that students would be “more prone to take on intellectual identities if we encouraged them to do so at first on subjects that interest them rather than ones that interest us” (265). He implies that this form of intellectualism is covered in under the mask of typical discussions about fashion, sports, pop-stars and many other aspects.…

July-Day 18 I can barely pull myself out of bed today, it's cold outside the blankets that have kept me safe since my descent to dreamland where I have been since 6:30 PM. I've slept for 12 hours and I want to keep sleeping. I want to stay in bed where nothing happens to any extremes. I dreamt of lighthouses and the light it casts out over the clear blue gulf sending a signal of safety to those passing by. I wonder about all the things that are like lighthouses to me.…

PM 11:37, October 6, 2015. After I came out from library, I walked on Bascom Hill. I pulled out my earphones and tried to feel the environment. Contrast to bright and noisy State Street and Wisconsin State Capitol, where I could see in distant, where I was covered with darkness and silence. There was a just a little light from streetlight, and only yellow and green leaves are glowing near that streetlight As I sit down next to biggest tree and feel the cushion of lawn, I found out there are not many things that I can observe here.…

There is a fundamental concept in Mahayana Buddhism, known as upaya or “skillful means”, which is exemplified in “The Parable of the Burning House”. Skillful means could be considered as the methods or strategies the Buddha uses to lead others to enlightenment. This concept can be considered unconventional because it doesn’t necessarily have to agree to Buddhist doctrines, however the purpose behind using skillful means must be derived from wisdom and compassion because it originates from Buddha’s compassionate project. The parable illustrates the concept of skillful means by telling the story of a wealthy man and his three young boys.…

Melissa Vargas argues that both works of Butler’s, Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents are not only a description of the current environmental crises, but also a critique of social issues in the United States. According to Melissa Vargas, Parable novels do not separate the environmental crisis from other social issues, including racism, sexism, homophobia, the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, and the specific problems that social injustice creates. Both novels illustrate a group of people (racial minorities such as, women, the poor, and lesbian, gay, and bisexual) already experienced a victimization in the American society. For Vargas, the relationship between environmental disaster and social injustice is evident…
