Every year there are 30,000 new cases of type 1 diabetes. Almost all of these new cases are in the children category. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease (Rubin, 2009) caused by the pancreas creating little to no insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches, and other foods into energy(http://www.diabetes.org, 2014). Most people that are diagnosed with this are either children or young adults(http://www.diabetes.org, 2014). Type 1 diabetes doesn’t occur overnight. It takes months and months of experiencing the symptoms. Some of the symptoms are increased thirst, urination, among other symptoms(http://www.advocacy.jdrf.org, 2014). Only 5% of people with diabetes have this type of disease(http://www.diabetes.com, 2014).

It’s causes a lot of disturbance in the machine causing it to want to give a lot if insulin meaning low blood sugar(www.youtube.com). That is why JDRF has a “road map” to follow while they are creating prototypes of the artificial pancreas. There are three different generations of artificial pancreas’. The third generation will be a fully automated multi-hormone closed loop artificial pancreas(www.advocacy.jdrf.org, 2014). This is what diabetic kids and pre-teens are looking forward too. A life without diabetes will be a great thing to be “rid of” when the artificial pancreas can catch every event of blood sugar in a person’s body. To advance the process of the artificial pancreas, JDRF is funding researchers around the world who are testing versions of an artificial pancreas. JDRF is also educating health plan executives, government officials, and clinicians about the promise of these new technologies. They are working with regulators like the U.S food and drug administration (FDA) to ensure these technologies become available and ultimately reach patients(www.advocacy.jdrf.org,
