Hydroponics In Europa

Improved Essays
Europa, a world that could be teaming with life. A liquid ocean underneath the icy crust. It is a hostile world above the surface. It is constantly bombarded by harmful radiation from its planet, Jupiter, because of its lack of an atmosphere. Its extreme temperature can make it even harder to colonize the surface. The temperatures can freeze liquid water in a matter of seconds. Low gravity can let astronauts reach escape velocity, which can cause them to go into space. So why haven’t we decided to travel to Europa until now? With freezing temperatures ranging around 102 Kelvin, it’s no wonder Europa is covered in ice. To avoid the frigid temperatures, the space station will be heated up by hydronics. Hydronics is the use of water through …show more content…
For protein, colonists will use soybeans. In one cup of soybeans, there is about 68g of protein. Europa does not have a rocky surface, but it does have an abundance of water. Hydroponics, which is a way to grow plants with mineral nutrient solutions found in water without soil, will be used. Europa is composed of mostly water. The water will need to be filtered by using Dean Kamen’s “Slingshot Water Purifier” to make it drinkable. Fertile soil will not be produced. However, plants still need the minerals found in soil. Hydroponics is the solution to this problem. Composting is the breakdown of organic materials into rich minerals, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Fertilizer can be used to help grow plants. It is all recyclable to help keep the colony …show more content…
Exercise will help deflect the deterioration of muscles and bones. Colonists will use Lower Body Negative Pressure (LBNP) which allows them to exercise with an effective body weight between 100% to 120% of what they feel on Earth. Centripetal force is a force that makes a body follow a curved path. Propellers on the boat that make the boat rotate fast enough to create artificial gravity is another way of saying centripetal force. Hydroelectric would be the main way to conduct power. Europa is mostly made out of water underneath the surface. Power can be created that way. The ship can fit about 150-200 people, so the colony will medium spaced. There will be 5 different decks each having a kitchen, a bathroom, and pull-out beds. There will be no windows since it is beneath the surface. The majority of the colonists will be archeologists, geologists, hydrologists, and engineers. They will work out every day to stay in peak physical condition. There will be a land rover on the surface to explore the surface and to collect samples of ice and

    1. Planning for changes is difficult due to the natural fluctuation of the great lakes water levels but there are factors that are certain that the levels as well as the region are changing negatively due to climate change (Kahl & Stirratt, n.d.). The water levels of the Great Lakes have declined over the past decades (“Climate Change Indicators: Great Lakes Water Levels and Temperatures”, 2016). Roanoke was a perfect location to use as a base, so secluded that the Spaniards would be unable to locate it, and near the West Indies. This concept influenced the chosen colonist for this settlement. Veterans of the Irish or European wars were chosen for their experience, meaning they could protect the colony from any danger, but the colonists would be poor at building and maintaining relationships with each other and the Indians. Victims of England's labor system such as the servants or the children in poverty created a perfect “pool of colonists.” The first expedition left England on April 27, 1584 and landed on July 13 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.…

The founding of the Jamestown Colony in 1607 was an incredibly difficult feat that could not have been accomplished without the sacrifice and grueling work of the settlers. They left relatives, acquaintances, and most of what was familiar to them behind and braved the rough sea voyage to the New World. When they reached Virginia, the colonists of Jamestown were forced to construct shelters and procure what they needed to survive, in addition to adjusting to an unfamiliar climate. They also needed to establish and maintain a friendly relationship with the Native Americans, who aided them in the first hard years of learning how to live in America. The prosperity of the Jamestown colony was achieved by the stamina and resilience of…

After arriving on Planet 451 in the Kuiper belt, I would assess the problems of the colony according to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. According to Maslow’s hierarchy, the basest needs of the colony have already been covered – the physiological necessities like food, water, and sleep. I would make sure the communications with mission control was working well in case of an emergency. I would create a socialist government, with jobs and resources distributed equally among all members. Next, I would hold an election for an advisory council of four other colonists to address the other tiers of Maslow’s hierarchy: safety, belonging and love, esteem, and self-actualization.…
