When it comes to understanding yourself and your personality on a deeper level than normally, you must take personal stories into perspective that have shaped your life while growing up. According to McAdams, “defining oneself through a personal story is an act of psychological and social responsibility” (Engler 2009). Psychological and social responsibility relate to how you act onto actions around you and how you tie society into your viewpoint of the world. In other words, explaining yourself through a story can show several things such as how your emotions played an affect, the type of response you displayed to something that happened, and as well as the lessons you learned through a personal but also social aspect. For example, one item I lost in the catastrophe was my trampoline. According to my memories, I would spend numerous hours playing games on the trampoline with my childhood friends: Ryan, Kenny, and Zack. When I had arrived back to my home after the hurricane had passed, the first thing I noticed was that my trampoline was gone. Even though I was gloomy for a period of time, I later realized I do not need to depend on materialistic things to be happy. After all, having an excellent family relationship brings me more happiness than any materialistic object ever …show more content…
I have learned when overcoming a tragedy it is important to be able to accept what has happened and being able to cope with it. Remaining optimistic and living each day as its own is also a great way to benefit overcoming the problem. In addition, thinking of the positives instead of the negatives can make a huge difference in the way one handles overcoming a tragedy. Personally, I think the situation not only shaped me into the person I am today but also allowed me to understand what it is like being knocked down and brought back up. A tragedy like Hurricane Katrina can shape a person a lot of different ways. Although the event brought adversity, I can definitely say my personality today has changed due to this personal

Before even entering high school, I made a decision that would ruin the next few years. Looking back, I had no idea it would have impacted me as much as it did, but even now I still wouldn’t have changed that decision. Everything that came after that decision, no matter how difficult, shaped me into who I am today, and I was able to meet some pretty amazing people and do a few things only a handful of people can say they’ve done. In elementary school, I was in the S.C.O.P.E. (Spotsylvania County Program of Enrichment) program, my county’s way of separating out students who they considered gifted and a distraction in the classroom.…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

Even with that mentality, I no longer feel any resentment or anger when I think about the events that transpired. I have come to accept that although the entire situation was horrible, these experiences are just a part of life. The way that we react and adapt to these situations determine the outcome even more than the event itself. When we are pushed to our limits, we learn more about ourselves and just how much we can overcome. The process of reflecting on Hurricane Katrina has made me remember that I am extremely lucky.…

One of these people is Rhonda Sciortino who reflects on what made her the person she is in her article called “Successful Survivors: Translating the Effects of Trauma into Life Skills” when she says, “I realized that the success I created… was directly attributable to the good characteristics and coping mechanisms I had acquired during the most painful times of my life” (Sciortino). This can be true in some cases such as Rhonda’s, but even for those who learned important traits while surviving, they usually struggle initially when returning to normal, everyday life. We saw this with the veterans earlier. While the traits veterans learned may help them later in life, we have seen that they work as negatives…
