Charity is a very important thing in our society. More and more young kids today try to help the homeless, elderly, and those in need. Kids and adults have started organizations to take care of their fellow human beings. There are volunteer organizations such as light house for the blind and visually impaired. There are many different types of volunteer opportunities available at the Light House and its satellite locations, and they encourage volunteers to take an active role in assuring that their interests, talents, and proclivities are put to good use to elevate their organization. “The Grand Central Food Program brings food directly to where hungry and homeless people are: Each night, our fleet of vans delivers life-saving meals of hearty stew, bread, fresh fruit, and juice or milk to approximately 1,000 people at 24 different street sites around New York City. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Grand Central Food Program and distribute food, clothing, blankets and other necessities while raising awareness about the other services provided by Coalition. The vans operate 6:30-9:30 p.m. every night of the year” (“coalition for the homeless”). This organization also offers shelter for the people in New York City. If you join them they want you to collect school supplies and book bags for children who cannot afford them so they can go to school and get an education. On the website they have charts showing more than 60,000 people in NYC are in homeless shelters every night 20,000 of them being children. Back in the 80’s those numbers were as low as 20,000. “While homelessness is certainly not a new phenomenon in the United States or in New York City, where it dates back to at least the colonial era, there is no question that modern homelessness, which began in the late 1970s, is a unique historical occurrence. In the 90’s homelessness in families became higher but homelessness in single people became lower. Now days the number of shelters went up 71 percent and homelessness in families went up 83 percent. Most people think homelessness cannot be solved but it can. Homelessness can be solved by going through multiple steps, one of those steps being lowering the prices of houses. Another way to end homelessness is to prevent it in the first place. Some people just need plane out help with figuring out their bills, rent, or how to get a job. Some people think all homeless people are addicts, but this is not true most people lost jobs or were just not responsible with money and bills. There are also organizations like the USO. “For over 75 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform” (“USO”).
