How does one start writing seriously? Although the primary goal for any writer is to offer something of value to readers, bear in mind that you are the first reader and should write for yourself, first. For instance, suppose you have decided to write a romance novel, what would you expect to feel about the story, your character’s and their lifestyle or life choices? Wouldn’t you want to cheer when they achieved their goals or be saddened if they failed? Your readers also want their emotions stirred. Involvement in your story doesn’t happen immediately, mind you, but gradually as your characters grow and your story develops. Only then will you experience their lives and their problems as real, but this only happens when you write first for yourself.
Next, come up with an original idea or a new way of telling an old one. Believe in the idea and develop it. To develop an idea, think seriously about what you want to say, what you want to express and what you want readers to take away from the experience. Think this through before you start to write.
In the event you find it difficult to formulate workable ideas, simply brainstorm and then choose the best idea that you can come up with. It should be one that motivates you enough to start and finish a full-length book of approximately 80,000 words (more or less) depending on the type of book you wish to write.
