In this story, one of the goals was to relate Animal farm to the Russian Revolution that took place in 1917. The Russian Revolution resulted in a deadly toleration government that ended up being worse than the one they overthrew. Many of the characters in Animal Farm were made to portray the main parts of the Russian Revolution. The farm where this story takes place is a model for Russia, and the main characters such as, Old Major, Snowball, and Napoleon, all portray the figures in the Russian Revolution.
Mr. Jones was a model for Czar Nicholas II who was known to be the last Russian Emperor. During his reign as emperor, the Russians experienced poverty, due to the Bloody Massacre of 1905 when protesters that were unarmed shot down by the army outside Nicholas’ palace. Hitler formed an alliance with Stalin in 1939 which eventually never worked out because soon later, Hitler found himself fighting against Stalin’s army in 1941. Fredrick seems to be an ally of Napoleon through the story but forged banknotes to reveal himself and show he was against Napoleon. The many confessions and executions of the animals represents the purges that Stalin put together to get himself out of any type of threat from the people of Russia. In the year of 1921, the people at the military base of Kronshdadt could not successfully rebel against the rule of communism much like the hens attempted to rebel against Napoleon. The battle of Windmill shown in Animal Farm relates to the Russians involvement in World War II, just like the battle of Stalingrad when Stalin’s army defeated Hitler’s in 1943.
