Chapter 1: The main character Ifemelu is introduced and the setting is Princeton. She 's an author of lifestyle blog. She 's from Nigeria, She ends her current relationship with her American boyfriend Blaine. Aunty Uju and Cousin Dike are introduced as well. Her best friend Ranyinudo In Nigeria is also introduced along with her ex-boyfriend Obinze. She 's currently at a salon and the girl who 's working on her hair is Aisha. She tells Aisha she has been in America for 15yrs when in actuality it 's only 13yrs.

Chapter 2 : Ifemelu send ’s Obinze an email, checking up on him, and asking how he is and informing that she’s coming back to Lagos. Obinze is at one of Chiefs party and he thinks back to the first time he met chief. He was with his

Ifemelu’s mother was very religious. Ifemelu wasn 't religious but she liked that her mother was. Growing up she pretended to be religious in front of her mother. Ifemelu’s father loses his job for not calling his boss “Mummy”. Aunty Uju and her have a close relationship, Aunty Uju advices and supports her as well as being a friend at times.

Chapter 4: Obinze was one of the popular guys at her school. Ifemelu met Obinze at a party in Kayode’s house. Ifemelu’s troublesome, bold and straightforward character attracted Obinze. Ifemelu’s close friends are Ginika, Priye, Ranyinudo, Tochi. Ifemelu was one of the popular as well.

Chapter 5: Ginika and her family are going to America (Missouri). Ifemelu meets Obinze’s mother, she doesn 't tries to impress

But Curt arranges her a job interview in one day and when she shows up, it turns out that she gets the job.

Chapter 20: She moves away from Philadelphia to baltimore to be near Curt. She gets an apartment in Charles Village. She later finds out that he cheated on her, so she pack her things out of his apartment and leaves. But, later forgives him and get back with him. Some years later she resigns that job although she was doing well there.

Chapter 21: Curt and Ifemelu visits Aunty Uju and Dike together for the first time. Things are not well with Bartholomew and Aunty Uju and she later leaves him.

Chapter 22: Ifemelu bumps into Kayode Dasilva and he tells her that Obinze had moved to England the previous year.

Chapter 23: Is about Obinze’s life in England. He was going to marry a girl named Cleotilde so that he can stay in England. He remembers the time he was continuously rejected American Visa. Obinze’s mother was going to Britain as a part of her job, so she puts Obinze’s name on her visa application as her research assistant. He was now in England for 3 years yet he hadn’t made anything of
