(National Sleep Foundation, 2015) On a regular basis I am getting anywhere from 5-6 hours of solid sleep during the week and upwards of 9-12 hours of sleep on the weekends. Both getting to much sleep and not getting enough sleep can cause similar issues. A person’s cognitive reasoning skills start to decline and their brain is unable to process and react as quickly as it should. Severe lack of sleep can cause anything from depression to hallucinations to micro sleeps. Micro sleeps are especially dangerous if the person is driving a vehicle or needs to be aware of their surroundings because they are sometimes completely unaware that they have even fallen asleep. A person who has gotten too much sleep is more prone to depressed moods and lack of motivation during the day. According to an article called “Sleep: Can Too Much Cause Problems?” by Jana Kaplan “Oversleeping has been associated with thyroid disease, kidney and liver disease, depression and dementia.” She also states in the article that people who sleep too much and too little have a “higher mortality rate”. For instance, I will practice good coping skills such as taking a deep breath when I am frustrated instead of compacting it all in and allowing it to continue to upset me throughout the day. In that spirit yours truly will continue to laugh every day and try to smile as often as possible. Laughing is a wonderful reminder of the good things in this world no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to others.
