When Walter Whitman wrote the poem “O Me! O Life!” in 1855, he wrote from the heart. He wrote for himself and expressed his own feelings. Not once did Whitman think that the poem he was writing would become a huge success and hit the hearts of millions of other people across generations. Whitman did not know that the words he was writing would still be significant to this day. What he also did not know was that his words would be so significant that “O Me! O Life” would a part of the movie Dead Poets Society which was an instant classic on its own. Throughout the poem, Whitman contemplates the meaning of his own life and how he could fit into a world that seems so empty. This applies to a lot of people’s lives. All of us are trying to find our true purpose; whether that is to be a doctor or lawyer, we all are trying to find what we are meant for. In Plato 's The Apology, Plato speaks of “Socratic self-examination.” To become self-aware of what one is doing and to stay away from any wrongdoing was what Plato was talking about (Plato). We have to strive with consistency in order to “perfect our soul.” Plato claims that if a person examines himself, with enthusiasm, that person will be able to free themselves. Therefore, seeing society and themselves in society, different than they did before the self-examination. Plato, just like Whitman, felt alone in his society. The movie received a eighty-two percent on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for best picture at the academy awards in 1990 (“Awards”). Dead Poets Society did so well because it took the struggles that millions of people face and put it directly in the spot light. The movie took the feeling of being lost in life with no direction and was able to give life a direction. Its characters face all of their own problems and through Keating were able to solve them. Dead Poets Society will continue to be a significant movie because the writer was able to help the characters resolve their personal struggles. The personal struggles that most people face in society no matter what century they are born into. People in any society beg to have the answer to the problems that are impossible to solve and when someone is finally able the answer society’s questions those answers become significant
