Register to read the introduction… Studies have proven that on average, the first born child scores three points higher on I.Q. tests than their younger siblings. This can be explained by the fact that first born children are able to experience their parent’s complete and undivided attention during their infancy, or until a new child is born. This can also be justified by parents expectations of the first born to be the most responsible and to help nurture the younger children. The eldest often has to answer questions from their younger siblings, which also helps them to develop better cognitive processing than their younger counterparts. The article I read is titled “Arts Education Matters: We Know, We Measured It”. This article highlights the importance and benefits of kids with knowledge and experience of the arts. They conduced an experiment with a control group that was not taught arts and one that was. The results were that kids exposed to the arts improved in the subject, made them more tolerant and compassionate, and it caused them to use critical thinking skills. Having results like that should make teaching art a priority in school, but since most teachers and parents want their children to grow up to have more reliable and structured jobs math’s and sciences mainly take priority.…

Firstborn children are typically believed to be serious, conscientious, directive, goal-oriented, aggressive, rule-conscious, exacting, conservative, organized, responsible, jealous, fearful, high achieving, competitive, high in self-esteem, and anxious. They may learn the concept of power at a young age, and this can be expressed in their desire to help, protect and lead others. The firstborn may also have the need to regain praise from their parents that they received before their siblings were born. The first born may come to feel unloved through the perceived loss of mother's love to the new baby. Adler (1964) referred to this as being "dethroned" by the younger sibling.…

In response to the lack of standardization and poor academic achievement in the United States (U.S.) education system, Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were designed to create clear and consistent benchmarks to ensure that all learners, regardless of where they live, graduate with the identified 21st-Century Skills needed to succeed in a global community ("About the Standards | Common Core State Standards Initiative", 2016). According to the CCSS site (2016), as of August 2015, 42 states, the Department of Defense Education Activity, the District of Columbia, and four territories have voluntarily adopted the CCSS in English Language Arts (ELA)/literacy and mathematics. However, since the adoption of CCSS, concerns have been raised among teachers, community members, and other education leaders regarding federally mandated content, implementation, and gaps in student achievement; particularly for diverse populations (Issues in K-12 Education Case Study Document 1, 2014). CCSS has affected what and how school teach, and the arts, in particular, have been downgraded because of the reform’s focus on ‘college and career readiness’…

After reading many different sources, it is clear that birth order has an effect on how kids act and what their personalities are. “The Achiever, the Peacemaker and the Life of the Party: How Birth Order Affects Personality” by Dr. Gail Gross, and “firstborns get intellectual advantage over younger siblings, study finds” by A. Pawlowski, all give numerous pieces of evidence that supports why each kid is treated differently by their parents, and why their parents have different expectations in school. Schools have a better chance in getting higher test scores if they are able to support and acknowledge the importance of Visual and Performing Arts classes. The arts provide opportunities to explore and interpret and react to a world that can seem cruel and distant and complicated. Schools should fully fund art education because it is not a waste of money or time; art education helps children who are at risk of dropping out of school. For a student being able to express themselves freely gives a more positive learning environment and a chance to view ideas in a different perspective.…
