The focus on specific types of relationships between the caregiver and patient is important, because studies done previous have mainly focused on student nurses and nurses reflections, rather than investigating the thoughts of patients. It is important to note that while learning to promote this type of care in a clinical setting, Johnson states “student’s awareness of their own feelings [is] important in creating a helping relationship” (as cited in Suikkala & Helena, 2005). Through awareness and collaboration by both parties in the relationship, the results in this study predict that a facilitative relationship can be formed.
