Register to read the introduction… I chose this theme because while Nick was growing up, he constantly questioned whether there was a purpose to his life, and he wondered why he was not “normal,” like everyone else. From the ages of eight until twelve he thought about killing himself because he felt like he was such an outcast from all of his peers, and he also felt like a burden to his parents because they practically had to do everything for him. He even attempted to commit suicide by drowning himself in the bathtub. However, he snapped out of it and did not go through with it because he would have felt terrible for his parents. This is why I chose despair as a theme, and chose a bathtub to depict this theme, because Nick could have let his fear of rejection take over and lead him to despair, thus leading him to actually take his own …show more content…
Since Nick has no limbs, he has been given the opportunity and privilege to visit people from many different backgrounds and nationalities. I chose pictures of different colored hands holding each other and holding the world, because he has been able to break down these cultural barriers, and share his testimony and preach his message about his faith in Jesus in places that otherwise would have been unheard of for anyone else. Since he was specially made by God, ever since the young age of 19, he has spoken in front of millions of people in schools, prisons, orphanages, hospitals, stadiums and simply as individuals in over 44 plus countries. I chose to illustrate this with a plant growing in the soil because not only has Nick been growing, but he is also planting the seed in millions of people to step back and take a look at their own life, no matter what their circumstances are, and try to start living their own “life without …show more content…
I chose to illustrate this with the picture of dolls that were made of yarn, because Nick lives by the fact that God has handcrafted everyone uniquely to fulfill God’s purpose for them to serve his will. Nick’s favorite verse from the Bible that he looks at to remind him of this is from the book of Jeremiah 29:11, when it says: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (NIV). He believes that it is his purpose to reach as many people as he possibly can, and tell them that God has a plan for them, and that no matter what their circumstance or situation, their life has meaning and purpose, just like his life

The first quote I chose was, “I bought a dozen volumes on banking and credit and investment securities, and they stood on my shelf in red and gold like new money from the mint.” This quote is when Nick is explaining his house and talks about how he has books on the shelves on investments and other things. He says that they stood there like new money from the mint. The reason this is, is because he wishes to become rich on his own and make more money by himself. It also explains to us that he is a very ambitious person because he wants to make a name for himself and succeed in life.…

There are many moments throughout the book where loneliness is portrayed through the characters. Beginning with Gatsby. The conclusion of Nick’s development is shown in both parts of the short story, "The Big Two-Hearted River". These stories show the end result of Nick’s growth, but also show that he is still growing and trying to change into a better person. Nick chose to go camping and fishing to get his mind off the war and his life, but to also reflect on all the opportunities he’s given, the people he met, and the things he learned. However, Nick made this coffee wrong, which shows that he still has learning to do (Hemingway 140-142).…

“I was within and without” . In light of Nick’s comment, explore how Hamid and Fitzgerald present outsiders in the Reluctant Fundamentalist and the Great Gatsby. Both novels portray various characters who feel as if they are “within” yet can never move past or get rid of feelings or the paranoia of being an outsider and being “without”. This is emphasised through Nick’s comment of being “within and without”. Due to the differentiated status of the characters, it could be argued that characters within the novel are marginalised by the societies they live in.…
