Uniforms: A Short Story

There I was standing in front of that shiny maple, endless, terrifying basketball court. My hands felt like I had literally submerged them in a bucket of water. My heart was pounding uncontrollably. I couldn’t understand why I had accepted to play just to please others. Was I really going to overcome everyone’s high expectations of me? Was I capable of mastering something I wasn’t ready for? Why do people tend to judge you by the way you look, and expect you to be someone you are not. There is a really important saying that’s states that no one should “judge a book by its cover.” I believe each individual its born with their own personal traits; these traits cannot be forced, because more than likely it will lead to failure. Cheering me and telling me to be ready when they passed me the ball so I could score. All I could feel was their white, big bows that were tide in their ponytails hitting my shoulders. Their plan was for them to do all the dribbling, and for me to just to catch the ball near the basketball hoop and immediately score. As the buzzer sounded, I realize I had missed the entrance of the Vela Middle School girls. They were all short, wearing their blue royal jersey and black, big ribbons tied in a bun. Well, at least I had an “advantage” my height. Seconds before the game started I was thinking of how to run without tripping with the ball in case someone threw it at me. When I finally had my head straight I notice I had missed something. Something that had changed everything I had planned. I had missed the tall, blonde, athletic, muscular, girl with long, wavy hair tightening her shoelaces. She was number 23, the same number of my jersey; she was about my same height. In my mind I was asking myself if having a taller opponent was a good thing or was that a factor I had to worry about? Well, at least I wasn’t going to be the only tall girl. As I was trying to convinced myself that this was actually good. I saw her in the eyes; she was intimidating. You could see her confidence from miles away. This girl knew what she was doing! As she was coming towards us my best friend Maria, whispered in my ear, “She is Catrina one of the best basketball players in her school, go get her friend.”
