Chap. 7 & 9 Notes
● The people who are ultimately the most successful at working a room are those who genuinely like, respect and trust other people. When we don’t really care about other people, they sense the insincerity and rarely take kindly to it. o I agree with the idea that we must care and be sincere when it comes to networking. This idea holds me from forcing myself to be outgoing. I truly believe that a good relationship is long lasting and we must stop the mindset of getting short-term benefits. People can sense the insincerity and the purpose of connecting them. The best way for networking is to connect without short-term goals and to treat people as a new friend that you want to invite him/her into your life. I think I kind of

I checked my phone 15 times a day. I checked my emails, tweets, linked in, WeChat, Facebook and UIC blackboard every time I pulled out my phone. When I logged into my laptop, the first site I checked are my emails and UIC blackboard. I do notice that I have the tendency of checking my phone to fill in my small free time, such as having meals and waiting for classes. Using phones are people’s first choice, not just me. I noticed when you tried to make eye contact with strangers sat next to you, they would pull out their phone to avoid conversations. As a matter of fact, you can tell if they are going to pull out their phones before you try to make the eye contact. Some people will respond and start talking. I have to admit that I have high reliance on my phone. 15 times a day might be normal compare to others. However, each time I use my phone can be more than two or three hours. That number did sock me especially when I planned to do HW …show more content…
I got distracted easily and focused too much on listening instead of reading. I felt much pleasurable when I just listen to music and relax for one hour than listening and reading textbook for three hours. Moreover, focusing on reading for twenty minutes is more efficient.

Cell phones are used for many things all across the world, however they are very mind controlling and people don't realize how detrimental they can really be. Think back 20 years ago, when kids played outside until the street lights would come on and people actually took their time to engage in good conversations to form some type of human connection. We as people thrive on human connection and friendships. Sherry Turkle mentions in her article that “conversation is the most human and humanizing thing that we do”. This statement made me ponder what conversations and relationships would look like without the distraction of cellphones.…

In “Connectivity and Its Discontents,” Sherry Turkle states that the wide use of technology is affecting the foundation of which people are building their relationships off of. People crave the affection and connection of other people. However, what we believe to be known as “connecting” is completely based off of our technological needs. When we are physically there with another person we tend to doze off and connect with our technology more than we are actually connecting with the person we’re physically with. We have sacrificed conversation for mere connection.…

Even though I have not finished reading “The Federalist Paper,” I still learn a lot about the foundation of American government and also about myself as a learner during the process. I know that I am more of a visual learner than an auditory learner, but I usually get bored really quickly whenever I read a long text that is full of information or does not have any pictures or graphs. So instead of reading “The Federalist Paper” in one go, I break it down into sections and then use a highlighter to highlight important facts and take notes as I go. These learning tips are not new, but I always find them helpful when I need to analyze the text later on. I also tend to get lost a lot when I read and end up skimming and skipping throughout the text.…

The Gun by Paul Langan was the first book I read alone back when I was in 7th grade. I was in my English class examining the shelf of books in the back of the room then a thought came to my head that I never read a book that I wasn’t force to read for homework or read over to prepare for a chapter quiz or test. So I asked my teacher if I could borrow the book for a few weeks which she allow. This book was my first that I didn’t have to stress over about reading 50 pages for the weekend or taking chapter notes to make sure I got and understood what I was reading. This was just for me, so I could take my time, come back to it at any time and I don’t have to rush through pages in order to fulfill an assignment.…

In the quote by Christopher Columbus he states “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination” I thought this quote pertained to me because I know this year there are going to be many obstacles in English class, but if I just push myself I know I can reach my goal. As a reader and writer, I believe that I have grown stronger over the years. In the past, I did not like reading at all I would try to get by with reading as little of the stories as possible in order to pass. I felt this way until this summer when I started to read the books for English.…

In the essay, “ The Lonely Good Company of Books,” by Richard Rodriguez,he mentioned to his readers in the very beginning that he was not big reader as a child. Rodriguez writes,” I knew my mother and father could read and write in both, Spanish and English(293).” He also mentions,” their reading consisted of work manuals, prayer books, newspapers, and recipes(Rodriguez 293).” From what Rodriguez writes we can gather that reading was not used very much in his house hold. Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I do is, I look at my cellphone to turn off the sirens going off on my alarm. I spend about 10 minutes on my phone viewing any notifications, messages, and timelines on my social media. Once I notice the time on my phone I quickly start to get ready for the day.
