Without a single inch of fear in his body, Mandela showed his strength against those who persecuted others. He disposed to sacrifice his own life for the values of equality. In Pretoria in 1964, he defended himself saying “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society… in harmony and with equal opportunities… It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die”. He wanted this so much that he was going to do whatever he could to accomplish it. Even if he had to lose his life at it, all of it would be worth it because his death was not going to be in vain, because he died for something that many have been trying to kill, but were killed instead. He has helped so many people that those who mudded his reputation were unnoticed. For example, Nelson Mandela became a great influence on Kennedy Odede, a black South African, who lived in a huge Kibera slum, where poverty was at its worst. Odede saw no reason to live. His family was destroyed, both his sisters were raped and impregnated at a very young age, his friends committed suicide and he had AIDS. Nelson Mandela was his last hope, as he stated “for the first time in my life I saw I had a choice” He read his book “Long Walk to Freedom” which completely saved his life. He believed that the words written in this book were Mandela’s directed at him, and it only took a few pages for Odede to leave his misery full of hopelessness and sorrow to start his own long walk towards freedom. Nelson Mandela has accomplished to remove Apartheid and become the first black president in South Africa. He obviously kept a country from falling apart during a time that it could have had separated creating a Civil War. This is due to his honesty, bravery and of course his warm heart.
