The learning needs assessment evaluates how the learner learns and can facilitate the teaching process. Every patient learns in different ways and it is important to individualize how the patients learn before the educator begins teaching. This way the educator can address issue that will facilitate or find barriers that prevent learning to occur. According to Jest & Tonge (2011), learning assessments help learners to identify their own strengths and weakness as well as for helping educators make decisions regarding health. I compared results of two different patients with the same diagnosis but different learning assessment needs were found and developed for each patient.

The younger patient did not have as many learning experiences to draw upon to learn. I think by giving him a handout would help him understand on sign and symptoms associated with disease and when to report any complications. The older learner had more experience to draw from but might need more instructions to prevent complication associated with other health problems. Another problem I addressed, the younger learner had a learning disability. I would need to keep the patients attention focus on teaching lessons. Keep the lesson short and prevent visual materials during the teaching process.
The next steps are to address how the learners learn the materials. I had both patients take the VARK learning styles assessments. The acronym VARK represents the Visual, Aural, Read or Write, and Kinesthetic sensory modalities used for learning (Inott & Kennedy, 2011, p. 314). Both score high in the kinesthetic learning and visual learning. Most learners tested usually have more than one way of learning but one will rank higher than the other. Both patient scored in the 4-6 range and both literacy level were addressed the same. The difference was the level of knowledge did make a difference in the educational level that I presented the information. Both learners were able to grasp complex learning and make adjustments to the NVS assessments. This let me know that information or handouts given to the patients they could make the connections to their own learning.
