Wind Power: Nonrenewable Energy Advantages

Improved Essays
When assessing my own energy usage I found that my home uses propane to heat and cook, and electricity for lights and the water heater. When I am at work we use electricity only, since we do not have a kitchen and our heating is an electric furnace as well as the water heater. When I am traveling to and from work I use gasoline in the car to assist on my journey. However, my area does have another form of travel which is the MARC train. The MARC train uses electricity when traveling to and from the different train stations. All five of these energy usages are technically considered nonrenewable energy resources. There are two other renewable energy resources in my area that is used. The first renewable resource is that some homes in my …show more content…
It helps with keeping the electricity price down. It is a renewable, green source of energy with huge potential. Some disadvantages to wind power are the cost to place a turbine and the noise it makes. Turbines are a threat to wild life and wind is unpredictable, so it may not generate any power (Maehlum, 2013). Conowingo dam is a hydroelectric facility that provides clean energy to locals in the area. It offers a cheap source of energy to home and is constant source for energy. However hydroelectric facilities can have some disadvantages if a draught ever happens or if the company relocates. Aquatic movement is limited unless the flood gates are open. An initial construction cost to open one is high and is hard to get approved to build one because of the time it takes to pay back the loan (“Hydroelectric pros and cons,” 2008). Waste to energy facility advantages has a huge impact on communities by clearing out old landfills to use the trash as a form of energy. Since these facilities use discarded materials it is a cheap way to have another energy source. This type of source will always be reliable due to people will always have waste. As with all advantages there are disadvantages too. Some disadvantages are the facilities are expensive to construct and people are not sold on that these facilities are considered clean from emissions (“Waste to energy pros and cons,” …show more content…
Dams used to be watermills to harvest energy from. Water wheels were difficult to distribute energy for long distances (“Water power,” 1998). Wind mills we only used to grind grains in the past. In today’s era, they have been repurposed to help as an alternate source of clean energy which has now been renamed as wind turbines. Solar power is not new technology and can be dated back to the seventh century B.C. when they used magnify glasses to make fires and burn ants. In today’s time period, we use solar power for solar farm plants to help bring a cost efficient energy source to homes (“The solar history,”

So these are some of the advantages and disadvantages of the all mighty wind energy. First the wind is a renewable resource with means that we will never run out of it. Also the wind is free and it is not under the ground so there is no cost to get to it. This means that there will be less cost to harness this energy. Also there are no harmful gases…

Many ideas and inventions have been used to make the use of our resources more efficient. Using solar power is one way we are using energy that is already there to our advantage. It is becoming more affordable, easier to obtain, and more popular within the country. Just in the past eight years alone, incorporation of solar power has increased from 1.2 gigawatts to thirty gigawatts (“Solar”). To give an example of the impact this has, that is enough energy to power about 5.7 million households in America.…

    • The wind energy depends on wind velocity. Wind velocities at different heights were expressed in terms of the corresponding available velocities at equal heights with and without reducer turbines. The results show that wind speed increases with reducer, starting with 1.35 times at the top of the reducer. The maximum increase is noticeable at about 300 slopes.…

This wind power got converted into mechanical power, which used to produce Electricity. “People started using wind power centuries ago with windmills, which pumped water, ground grain, and did other work” (Hunter, 2011). In other words, the wind’s turbine uses the wind to generate electricity. Advantages of Alternative Energy Sources: • The main advantage of renewable sources of energy is that they are inexhaustible. This makes them sustainable and reliable now and in the future.…

(Opening Paragraph - One) Energy is and has been in a high quality demand for all over the world. Since August (2015) the energy rate for Indiana has gone up 11.46% in the last seven months rapidly. It is a struggle to be able to find safe, cheap, and renewable resources in order to build around Southern Indiana. Using Geothermal, Hydroelectric, and Nuclear Fission Energy would be a useful and affordable source of energy for a town similar to Scottsburg because all of theses resources have a cheap and faster way to meet the requirements to energy demand. Wind Power Advantages and Disadvantages Wind power is obtained by the wind in our atmosphere and then it’s converted into mechanical energy followed by electricity. Basically, wind is free and wind turbines. In addition, wind power does not release pollutants and greenhouse gases into the environment and it only requires a small amount of land. The first disadvantage is, that the wind is not continuous and may not produce electricity.…

In 2014, the US alone used 98.324 quadrillion BTUs of energy. Roughly 82% of that was fossil fuels. Renewable resources accounted for 10%, including solar, wind, hydroelectric, and more, and the remaining 8% was nuclear power. This energy was used to do everything from power our televisions to turn on our lightbulbs. Unfortunately, our reliance on fossil fuels brings with it serious side effects, including global warming.…

Reiterating what we discussed earlier, that Wind energy in U.S. has the potential to generate about 1.5 times the current U.S. demand, even the 20% penetration of wind by 2030 as projected by the U.S. government, can have a significant impact on the carbon emissions and reduction in the demand of fossil fuels (exhaustible energy sources). As a study conducted by NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), the cumulative carbon emissions reduction of 2100 MMTCE (Million Metric tonnes of Carbon Emission) can be achieved just by the penetration of 20% Wind Energy. Furthermore during the 20 year life cycle of wind turbine additional 4000 MMTCE of carbon emissions can be avoided. Also by replacing coal with wind energy will decrease the water usage…

Good wind sites are often located in remote locations, far from cities where the electricity is actually needed. Transmission lines must be built to bring the electricity from the wind farm to the city. Turbines may cause noise and pollution. Although wind power plants have relatively little impact on the environment compared to other conventional power plants, there is some concern over the noise produced by the rotor blades, visual impacts. The turbine blades may also cause damage to local wildlife.…
