Soul Mate Definition

After reading chapter six of our textbook I’ve decided to focus my thought paper on the question “If there is so much that has to go into a relationship to work is there really such thing as a soul mate?” The dictionary defines soul mates as “a person ideally suited to another as a close friend or romantic partner.” But what I want to question is this idea that there is somebody in the world meant for us. They are perfect for us or that they are our other half, and we get this idea from the Greek myth about humans once being built with two heads, two genitals, four arms and legs and that the Greek God Zeuse got angry and split everyone in half and that humans spend the rest of their lives looking for their “other half” and thus the concept of soul mates. But there is so much that has to go into a relationship, so much time, effort and energy that I don’t think there could possibly be a perfect person for everyone. I think many people think that a soul mate is just someone they love, someone that they can see themselves spending the rest of their lives with and again I think this really undermines the hard work that goes into a healthy relationship. As much as I think the concept of soul mates is beautiful I also think people should be proud of the hard work they put into their relationships. Many people think that thinking of a relationship as work is wrong, unhealthy and not right and some even say that relationships shouldn’t be work, and I think these people are going to really struggle for a long time if they continue to look at relationships this way because they are work, and its often very hard work but taking pride in this hard work and thinking of it as a good thing is healthy and only helps the relationship grow and
