Conservation Biology Personal Statement

There were three boys in middle school who liked to tease the girls in my church; they especially enjoyed tormenting me and my two friends. I remember one particular occasion in which my friends and I were walking down the sidewalk and the boys approached us from the opposite direction. One of them was holding a lizard in his hand, and he thrust it into the faces of my friends. When they realized what it was, they screamed and stepped back a few steps. The boy then turned to me with a mischievous grin on his face and shoved the lizard in my direction. My response? A genuine cry of “Aww, how cute!” Needless to say, my answer spoiled their fun.

To put it another way, a student can major in conservation biology and become a ‘conservation biologist,’ but this term also includes other specializations and careers, such as conservation ecology, in which conservation is the main emphasis. In nearly all conservation biology research and restoration projects, the goal is to protect the environment while educating and assisting local people who are affected by poor environmental conditions and unsustainable living practices. I have already earned my associates degree through the dual enrollment program offered by Florida Southwestern State College; thus, although I am nervous about moving out of state and attending a university, the experience I gained at the state college has given me confidence that I can be successful at Cedarville. As I pursue my bachelor’s degree, I will engage in undergraduate research that will prepare me for real-world situations; this opportunity will also help either confirm my choice to one day perform research, or else it will guide me in a different direction. I also hope to spend at least one summer break studying in other country or at the Pacific campus of the Au Sable Research Institute. Because I want to travel when I transition into my career, studying in unfamiliar locations will be an excellent preparatory experience for me. Additionally, studying at institutions other than Cedarville will allow me to participate in classes and research that would otherwise be unavailable. I am uncertain of whether or not I will continue on to graduate school after earning my bachelor’s degree. However, my current plan is to take a gap year after graduation to gain hands-on experience in the field before continuing on to earn a masters or doctorate degree.
