When you get this letter 10 years will have passed since I was in your position. I never really considered that I had a racist bone in my body. I mean, most if not all of my friends then were minorities of some sort, and I got along just fine with them. But subconsciously I began to notice that the successes of minorities irritated me because part of me believed I was better than they were. So I began to try to find ways to justify my superiority so that I could avoid the reality that if I didn’t really start cracking down I would lose out to people of color.…

Stop and think. How would you feel if there was no one to support you when your life is suddenly in turmoil, where your dignity as well as independence has been taken away from you, where you’re struggling completing the tasks that you used to complete without a second thought? As someone who has battled with mental health, fortunately, I have been given the support needed to aid my recovery from my family, friends and dedicated health and social care professionals. I learnt the importance of self-care and routine and expressing myself through the activities I enjoy, including my love for reading, as like me, many individuals find it extremely difficult to talk about our thoughts and feelings and require a different outlet.…

One the most significant things that I learned in introduction to human services this semester was that everyone experiences situations differently, what might be something unimportant and minor to you might be a trigger for someone else. You should always be mindful of others, I think us as human beings we tend to be a bit selfish and like to think that the world revolves around us. Which, is ridiculous because the world has 7.3 billion people and counting, and what makes me more significant than all those other people? Sometimes I’ll go out to the store in a hurry and I’ll get a line with a cashier that is being extremely slow, and I get upset and start thinking of some nasty things about the cashier, without ever taking into consideration what that person might be going through.…

The three characteristics/strengths that I feel I would bring to the Social Work program would be; first that I am a joyful person; second that I am a very empathetic person; third I have experience. I am not the type of person that likes to dwell on the bad but instead I have always made it a point to have joy even through the most difficult times in my life. That does not mean that I am never sad but, it means even when I am sad that I remind myself of the good I am blessed with. I always try to help the people around me see the good in life, because there is so much good. You wouldn’t think that joyfulness would relate to the ethics of social work but in all actuality it does.…

For my reflective essay I have chosen to look at the challenges of working with older people in a health and human service setting and in particular how this would challenge me to work as an effective practitioner in the discipline of nutrition. I have also spent time with older adults who are determined to live out their years in their own home despite chronic pain, disease and social isolation and finally I have worked with older adults living in aged care facilities who have multiple conditions, prescribed multiple medications…
