My Overall Reflection Of Leadership

Register to read the introduction… Prior to this class I believed that managing and leading were synonymous and that a manager is automatically considered a leader. However, I have learned that a leader is not someone who just checks things off a list but much more. I still believe that a leader is someone that completes tasks and has managerial skills to get the job done but also can be much more influential. I believe that good leadership in any field will make the people involved much more productive and will overall have a greater impact on overcoming adversity. After concluding this class I believe that leadership can be defined as influencing people to complete the tasks they are confronted with while thoroughly giving them motivation and guidance. In high stress environments that cadets are forced to be effective soldiers, being aware of my emotions and being able to effectively address them would give me a huge advantage in all leadership aspects. I also scored well on the theme social awareness which will help me understand the dynamics between everyone under my command. With these two strengths, I will be able to successfully assess my emotions and help address others, while still motivating and inspiring. I will need to recognize other cadets emotions and how to handle each individual as they go through the hardships of becoming a commissioned …show more content…
Previously, I believed that a leader would just focus on their strengths and leave their weaknesses to the side, however, now I understand that a great leader will surround themselves with people that have strengths in areas that they may be weak. Another very meaningful lesson we covered was the idea of motivation and where it comes from, as well as how to motivate others. I believe this is an incredibly important aspect of leadership and if not addressed correctly the overall team could be drastically effected. This is especially important to me and my 12 month plan because many people become very unmotivated in high stress situations when exhausted and knowing that it is a long term issue. e) List at least 3 but no more than 6 action steps to continue your growth as a leader.
