Personal Essay: My Experience In My English Composition Class

Decent Essays
Every experience in life is a learning experience. Every test and trial, and every victory and triumph helps to define who we are. Likewise, my experience in my English Composition class has been a very rewarding experience. Through this class I was actually able to find out that I like writing. Every time we received a new essay I was always intrigued to get into the library and start drafting on the assignment. Truthfully, my first thought was that I wouldn’t like the class and I’d wonder off into distracting thought during the class. However, though the class started early in the morning I was always alert and interested in the lesson. One of the best attributes to the class was being able to have drafting workshops. In these workshops …show more content…
Through peer review we were able to get revisions from at least two other people. In these workshops my peer helped me by letting me know what things I should add into my essay, what things I should take out, and what I should expound on. Without peer review seeking help from our professor would be very time consuming. 17 people trying to find a time to meet with the professor would be very tedious for everyone. I also believe peer review workshops are very helpful because it teaches us how to seek out help from other students when we are outside of this class and it also teaches us how to help other students when they need …show more content…
I honestly believe that this class has helped to prepare me for the English courses that I’ll be taking in the next few years. Every aspect from the atmosphere to the Supplemental instructions sessions that we received in the class has been extremely impactful to me. I know this may sound a bit crazy, but if I were able to do these six weeks again I would not hesitate to do it. As I reflect on this class I’m able to reflect on myself as well, and I’ve found out so much about myself in these past few weeks. Who would have known that I would come to college and embark upon my new found enjoyment of writing? What an enjoyable time this has been. I can’t wait to see what these next few years hold for

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

English in college has been a very different class from what was described throughout the Calverton School experience. The readings themselves are similar to the International Baccalaureate program that I faced in high school; however the writing style which has been introduced is still somewhat foreign. The understanding for writing which I was accustomed to in high school has become blurred and foggy; it seems inadequate for this class. The realization that academic writing does not exclusively revolve around a set structure, such as a five paragraph essay, was difficult to accept; and continues to plague my writing. From a perspective standpoint, what has truly changed is the approach to writing is that writing is not trying to always…

Writing was not a subject that held my interest in high school. Throughout the last twelve years I have found myself having to write letters, proposals, and business correspondence for my employers. I would complete the assignment and move on to the next task. Deciding to further my education I enrolled in Daytona State College and my first class was your ENC 1101. I have seen a change in my pre-class writing style; I have honed my skills, and the different techniques I have learned while taking this course have only improved my writing style.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

This class has helped me a lot with handling my procrastination habits. I learned a lot more in here than anywhere else because we actually had a clear view about everything. I still believe that everything in this class is good as it is and I would not change anything about it. The pace we use to work in this class is pretty fast but I think that is the best way to keep out minds focused on task.…

During my time at high school, peer edits were not utilized as often. However in this class, it was important to get a second and third opinion. In the end it did not only help my own paper, but I was able to help others with their paper as well. Peer review allowed me to improve my papers and learn about errors such as comma splices. Especially in my literacy…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

Learning how to start the drafting process on a paper and build an effective was by far the most important skill I have learned in class. Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

At the beginning of this English course, I was so nervous and scared that I would fail. I do not think I have ever been a good writer. English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
